I need some jingles for my Bodie!
Several times in the last three weeks Bodie has been panting and seems to produce very little sweat! The poor guy lives where it is in the 90s and 100s regulary in the summer. He lives in the airy barn, not in a stall, so he is not in the sun. He is sort of a metabolic boy and we have to clip him 3 to 4 times a year. So his coat was long for summer. Saturday I was there, after being gone for three weeks on vacation, and he was panting from standing in the sun while being clipped. It is so sad to see the horse you love panting. You cannot imagine how I felt. Would he drop over or what? It is so scary! So we need some jingles from you guys! I have ordered OneAC?? and the vet will see him tomorrow. Lots of electrolytes for now and they hose him off when he seems bad. He is a picky eater and getting salt or electrolytes in him is a struggle. If anyone has any experience with this please pipe in with your experiences!Jingling for my needy boy!

i have one that does not sweat well in the summer as well. the panting and all of it, and he lives outside 24/7, does not like the stall, just gets him more upset. we rigged up a mister for his paddock. he goes and stands under it when he gets hot. then will wonder off the graze, then stand under the trees and then back to the mister sometime later on. they really are smart about it. my guy is on one ac, i really don't think it helps him though. there was a product that i used last year that did seem to help him sweat. it was called pro- sweat. i am not sure if it is available in your area. i would be glad to have some shipped to you, i did see a difference while he was on that. i will be switching him back to that this week. jingles to your boy, and let me know if you might like to try the other stuff. i will be heading in to town to pick some up for my guy wed. or thurs. stacey

I had a horse that did this. To get him to sweat we had to hose him down with luke warm water, get his temp down and then he would sweat. Strange... Misters would help him. Can you get him a mister? |

ah, I went through this and know it very well: first use One- AC - I did, and I also tried acupuncture AND guiness beer. One of these things helped - she started sweating again. But first and foremost, if you can keep the horse inside with a fan or even outside with misters, that can help alot! I wish you the best - my gal did recover her sweating capability! |

See if he will drink any of the Gatorade flavors if he wont do electrolytes. Just pour a little in the bottom of a bucket or something he can lick it out of. Also see if he will eat the electrolytes dry by themselves as a treat out of your hand. Something else you might want to ask your vet about is Sputolysin. |

This spring I rode a young OTTB with anhidrosis. We weren't told of it when he arrived. The first warmish day that I rode him he suddenly started panting after 10 minutes of trotting and acted like he might go down. Very scary. One AC worked for him -- after a few days he started sweating normally -- but he went off to a new home a few weeks later so I don't know whether it continued to work once it got really hot. |

Hang in there Bodie!!!! I bought a mister system you hook up to an "outdoor" fan, from Country Supply. It has 4 misters arranged in a circle. I zip-tied them to the fan..and ran a hose to it. It's that easy I went to Costco and bought 3 heavy duty outdoor fans..$50.00 each..and the misters..I forgot how much..sorry...I hung 2 up along the fence by the base, and tied it onto the rail..then I got 2 portable panels and put them in front of them so my little one couldn't get to it.. The other fan and mister is hanging from a tree branch.. they have found them..and I even "caught" them resting infront of them..so it's worth the $$$$ and with the water and fan...he'll cool down...and YOU'LL be able to rest and stop thinking about him..I KNOW, I..as well as everyone on the BB, WORRY about their horses in this heat and humidity. It can drive you Just a suggestion..questions...let me know.. HH

Thanks for caring about my Bodie! I do not live near him and have not seen him since Sunday. They would call me if there was trouble. I am most interested to see what the vet says. The horses live where it is hot but not terribly humid. In the foothills of CA there is not too much humidity and the place is on the river so we have a nice breeze. But it has been over 100 there quite a bit and Bodie has always be a hot horse so he must be suffering more than usual. He is not in a stall so the air is good! He lives part time in a 14 by 16 paddock and the balance of the time he is in 1/3 of the indoor arena. They keep a fan in the feed room and he stands where it hits him when he is out in the ring. Maybe I can convince them to put one near his paddock. I will check it out. Hopefully he will be better with the body clip!! Mr. Gunnar is a wonderful man and body clips Bodie 4 times a year for me! It was hot on Saturday and that is a tough time to clip, particularly Big Bodie, who twitches like a mad man!I will let you guys know what the vet says!! Thanks for your support and suggestions. I will take them all to heart!
