I need to pick everyones brain. I think me and my mom might be completely nuts, but we want to show our little colt in breeding in hand. The stallion to our colt has bred his last mare and is now being retired. The breeder is completely in love with our colt and wants to keep him intact and basically lease him from us. Weve had him evaluated by three different vets all of which think he is superb. So we figure if he is going to stay a stallion we should start getting a show record on him. He is VPBA so we were going to work for points in that. Now, I know they do babies, but thats about the extent of my knowledge. Can someone give me a general run down of what baby needs to know and what will be expected of him in the ring? My biggest concern is if the mare has to trot sound. So ANY help would be so greatly appreciated. |

No, the mare won't have to trot, nor will the foal. They only walk as foals, and trot when they are yearlings. Some people don't braid the mares, but if you really want to do it "right," you should braid both mare and foal. At least the mane on the mare. You will need someone to hold the mare, but put the "handler" on the foal, as only the foal will be judged. The foal should have a nice, refined halter and shank that will show off his head. First, they will be lined up in the order they come in the ring, and the judge will evaluate conformation on all the babies. Then, they will have to walk towards, and by, the judge. Be sure the mare never gets between the foal and the judge, so the judge can always see him. Then, they may or may not form a new line in the order of placement. Some judges do, some don't. And then you are done. If your foal wins the foal class, he is eligible to come back in for Best Pony judging. Foals rarely win this, and so many people don't bother taking a foal back. But if he is REALLY exceptional, he may have a chance against the older ponies. As a yearling, two and three year old, he will have to wear a bridle. He will be lined up as above, but will be asked to trot during the movement evaluation. Another line may be formed and the winners announced. First and second place winners may return for BP and reserve. Your pony must know how to stand still, briefly as a foal, longer as an older pony, and also move in hand without breaking or playing. Teach him to stretch his neck out using your hand, whip or a toy as the "target." Get him comfortable with moving any feet you direct him to move so as to keep him standing square or just off square. It take some practice, but once they learn it, you don't have to keep drilling. It can be lots of fun. Good luck! I should also say that I am speaking of hunter pony breeding. Can't speak to the breed show way of doing things. |

The plan is to do the vpba hunter breeding. Ive done AQHA halter out the wazoo... but am a little clueless as to what one does with a baby. Weve been working on walking all over the farm without mommy (who is not happy about this) and standing and a little bit of trotting. However he is overly friendly and wants to climb in my lap, or anyone else who comes anywhere near him. |
