i have a 2yo paint gelding. we have done a good amount of ground work and some saddle work. i was wondering when yall start your horses as far as riding...? i have saddled and sat on my guy. he didnt even flick an ear. i was thinking of doing 1 or 2 10 minute WALKING ONLY riding sessions once a week with him. |

I like to wait and break them late in their 3 yr old year, then give them the winter off, and bring them back early spring as 4 yr olds. But nothing is set in stone, as all horses are different, some need to "bake" even longer, so may not get going fully until they are 5, and some, just "show" me that they are ready earlier... I try though to be patient, as I would like my horses to have longevity, something we don't see as much anymore. |

good points. thanks! well heres another wrench -- im leaving for vet school in august. he'll have the fall and winter off. im hoping to bring him to school with me a few months of 2nd semester. then hopefully i can send him to a trainer to be professionally broke in april (he'll be 2 months shy of 3). when i get home from school in may, we'll both be ready to hit the easy trails. its just such a hard decision.

We start ours when they are mentally and physically ready. Some as 2 year olds, some as late as 4. Best bet is to just have the vet look at him. |

Good luck at vet school, NCSU right?? That is my alma mater!! Go Wolfpack!! First year is tough, it may be hard to bring him, or get time to be with him....but if you are die hard, like most equine folks, you will get it all done!!
