Just wondering something. At most boarding barns, do the BM and/or the BO do any of the daily work? That is, mucking stalls, turning out horses, mixing feed, feeding and haying, etc. or does the barn help do all of that? If the barn help does that, what do your BM and BO do? |

At my barn, the BO feeds and turns out about 3 days and 3 nights of the week. She does not do stalls at all. The rest of the work is done by boarders who volunteered to have money off their board in exchange for stall cleaning and/or feed+turnout. Just off the top of my head, at least eight boarders are part of that regular schedule (there are 17 horses at the barn). There is also one worker who comes in to feed, turn out, and muck on Saturday afternoons and evenings, but otherwise it's the BO or a fellow boarder doing the work. |

At my barn, there's a BO, a morning BM and an evening BM. Both BMs muck the stalls in their respective barns. AM BM feeds in the AM, hay, turnout or bring in and PM BM feeds in the evening, hays, turnout or bring in. BO does duty if one of them is unable or she uses the working students. |

At the barn where I work, the BO/trainer doesn't do any of the manual labor, just does all the bills, scheduling, lessons, etc. The BM does a limited amount of stalls, grooms, turns out and feeds twice a day, plus all the 'other stuff' like medications, wound care and whatnot. The assistant BM does a normal amount of stalls with the grooms (including myself) and grooming, turnout, feeds with BM. There are three of us grooms in addition to the BMs. It works pretty well, and everyone gets 2 consecutive days off a week. Both BMs live on property, BO does not. |
