Gossip tells me that some horse owners are using Advantix - the doggie/kittie tick/flea stuff on their horses.

Anyone know about this? Thoughts on it please?

Thanks

Hm, I know they make equispot for horses which is similar to Advantix. I think I'd use that before I used something for dogs/cats.

Last year, after Shane was treated for Lyme for the 3rd time... I started using human DEET on him. Nothing near his face or any sensitive body parts. The vet okayed and recommended this. Can't really say whether I saw a huge difference or not-- but he survived to tell the tale.

I've used human bug stuff on my horse for the last 8-9 yrs or so. No problems - a little $$$$ but they are worth it. ;)

I've been using the Farnum roll on stuff on ther face after I found a dammfrickingTomasHCruisebastard tick on my horse's nose last week. :pissed:

Yup, I used my BIG dog's tick stuff on my old mare. The dog is 100 lbs and requires two tubes. So I used two tubes on the horse as well. Put some from croup to dock, some at the crest, a drop on her throat between her cheeks, and a line on the inside of each leg. The leg lines started just below the ankle to mid cannon.
We go on trail breaking rides and it is mega tick infested up here. Without the tick juice we all come back with a minimum of twelve ticks each, with the tick juice, maybe one or two.
My mare is super sensitive, but no reaction. However, be sure to use the dog as cats are alien creatures and therefore require different chemical components not readily tolerated by us native species.

Actually, it's the other way around--cats are much more fragile than dogs, and cannot stand the dog Advantix (it's actually still called "Advantage" for cats and is only labeled for fleas, not ticks).

Two things you should all be aware of:

1. Frontline, Advantage/Advantix, Revolution are NOT all the same thing. They have slightly different mechanisms of action.

2. (And this is the most important one) Do NOT use the Hartz, Sergant, BioSpot, Compass crap that you can get at WalMart on your cat, dog, horse, etc. Really. I cannot tell you how many seizuring animals I've had at the clinic due to that crap.

Yes, per Bayer (I think they are the makers of Advanrix anyways) you absolutely can use it on your horse. Just good luck paying for it. Or having it last longer then a few days, which is the main reason we have not seen it for horses. If only our horses could start panting :teehee:

ha ha - ya I know that cats are more 'delicate' than dogs, horses, or us. I would never use anything that wasn't specifically for felines on them - I was just making a joke.....

:psycho:

Actually this year I am just using garlic in the feed, flea/tick powder on the legs, and bug spray on the body.
