Now what..After the panic subsides...
Case History...Big, airfern of a Smartblood...Vet put him on a diet last year cuz he was fat as a tick....
Clipped him for the first time in our personal history in the Fall...Tons of coat as usual, but really didn't want to deal with the never-ending sweat-not-drying issues...So we took the easy way out and clipped him.
Shedding like crazy since January...But it's STILL coming off him in sheets....
Weight finally starts to go when Pro pulled everyones grain for the Winter....9 months after cutting his grain to 2 qts a day.as per Vets orders
Put him on Rice bran to blow the coat OUT...STILL shedding like mad....
Gone for a 10 day roadtrip and Pro decides to pull blood...
Just GUESS what they find....Blood levels at 56??? I really don't know what that REALLY means....
How often should we pull blood...how long after diet change and meds started????
"Cause I'm still in Panic Mode....
He's coming 17 years old....
PS...
And now my Fave Rx supplier is no longer carrying Pergolide, due to FDA findings regarding heart-valve damage?????

Before Vet says...Less Food, Bubbles....

It's been recalled because it's used in people and that is where it causes heart valve damage. It is used for Parkinson's patients.

Veterinarians are trying to get it labeled for use in equines only or for veterinary use only so they may continue to get it for animal use. It already was being used as off label because it is a human drug. At the present time it's been ok'd by the FDA for compounding. Pergolide

First Irish

Take a deep breath - this is a NAncy Nurse issue - not a life/death issue.

There, a little better? Good.

Now, google for info and keep haning here with pals and it won't seem so awful. There is much that can be done.

again

Glad things are not too bad after all! I am doing this same research and it's really confusing. The Yahoo group nearly blew my brain up with their hay analysis spreadsheets. :psycho:

My big fat lame pony is very cresty and now has fat pockets....I have her on D-Carb balance supplement; Beet pulp for 1/2 her hay consumption, grazing muzzle overnight on pasture, TC Lite...and still no change; since she's lame exercise is a problem and it doesn't look like we can manage her condition just with diet/exercise at this point. So we're looking into the next step and testing & medicating..... :(

Can I ask what Pernax powder is? I didn't see it on the SmartPak website?

Best of luck to you. Hopefully things will stablize and without a major inconvenience to you and your horse's routine (and wallet!!)

Yeah, were having no problem getting it for our clients. Your vet should be able to order it for you in liquid or powder form.

Just going off seal harbor's response-agree. I have been on pergolide(Dostinex) for over 10 years and was stressed when they recalled. Thankfully, it was the Parkinson's patients who were at a risk due to their large quantities of intake of the drug and the threat to their heart, not my condition. It is interesting that they use this drug for horses. I also took Permax, but it made me sick. I wonder if horses have adverse reactions as I did to the drug. <_<

Irish, you just have to love the big white face don't you? The funny thing is, when my Quinny was born I really didn't like the blaze and tried selling her as a yearling. That's how I initially met "Hattie" in Florida. She liked Quinn's breeding (Rio Grande) and wanted to know why I would sell her. Then I figured she must be an okay horse so I kept her. She has been my Saint Quinn ever since. Carts my not very talented backside around with nary a complaint.

I was so devasted when Rio died on the 21st of May. I had bred Meredith on the 14th and then found out on the 29th she didn't catch. Damn. She was bred to Cabardino on Tuesday of this week and Quinn's dam is being bred to Rio's Filius likely next Monday. I short cycled her last night.

So, yes I do love those big smoochie white faces now. Quinn shares the air fern metabolism of yours as well. :sigh:

OK..Vet says he can stay on the ricebran and cornoil and I will soon be up to my hips in Permax...
Vet dropped off a jar, cheaper than Smartpak, which shipped today, and his next Smartpak has it already added.
Gonna stick with the Vet, tho, cuz for the first time ever, he's cheaper. And Pro was very, very smart when she told me not to bother making up baggies.....
Now, I just gotta get over being so mad at him for dumping me on my head last month....Right now, I'm WW3 looking for an excuse
Out cold for 20 minutes, all because he decided to change the game plan..
Umm...NO.

Quinn....I'm nursing a very, very sore, fuzzy brain.
Lotsa names and stories in your post, which really deserve I educamate myself further...
But this old, pissed sweaty ditz needs a shower.....

Irish :luck: :luck: for Bubbles and    for you.
I find the yahoo group info informative but also confusing. Also the differences/overlaps between IR and Cushings has me a bit bewildered.

Fred, final resource, well first resource wil be my Vet.
I can only deal with what's going on now.So I'll do what he says, and look for anymore changes.
I feel better informed today, and you guys, as always did what you all do best.....
I'm not thrilled, am somewhat reassured and definitely calmer.
That's a good start.
