I have a No dogs here rule. for the barn and my shows it is just not the place for dogs, you can not ride and look after your dog at the same time.

I'm curious. To the barn owners that have the "no dog rule" did you start out that way or get driven to that decision because people abused the privilage?

I started that way. I worked in to many barns and put up with to many dogs running around and horses & owners getting hurt to let it happen in my barn.

We started with an dogs are welcome leashed rule and our own dogs frequented the barn.

NOBODY could read and dogs were lose all the time. Then it became a NO dogs allowed rule and even then and now we have offenders. We even made it fair by banishing our own dogs to the house during buisness hours! <_<

However when Bubbles the shark dog eats his mommys BMW seats while she rides and he sits in the AC because she again cant read / doesnt listen. The point ususally hits home  :brickwall:  !!!

OH, this is a huge pet peeve of mine (no pun intended). I am the biggest animal lover, but really think that dogs do not belong at the barn. My BO has an older Corgi that comes to the barn, but she's a sweetheart who mostly lays in the shade and does not bark. Hearing some of your descriptions, I'm relieved that we don't have more of an issue. I think your clients who do not abuse your leniency with dogs will be thrilled with the new rule. I know I wouldn't board or lesson at a barn where there were disruptive dogs. It really is dangerous.

Well I look at it this way. At least I won't have to worry about the visiting dogs eating my dog and cat food anymore and there will be a lot less dog sh!t everywhere.

If the dog owners get offended because they think it's personal against them then too bad so sad.

That's the real answer. Your property, your decision. And honestly, I can't understand why anyone would be offended. I have two dogs and love them to pieces; they were my first "babies". But I would never bring them anywhere without asking, and even when people offer to let them visit I usually don't. It's a hassle to watch them, and even though they are good, they are dogs. They are not 100% safe no matter what. And why would anyone want my dogs around while they are riding? If they want to see my dogs they can come to my house!

The owner of the barn I ride at has two dogs and another boarder has two dogs that are there occasionally. I've never seen anyone else bring an animal there....there must either be a rule, or an unwritten rule that the owner gets to decide what dogs can be there, and I like it.

I agree, the best of rules are those that are not written but followed... the one that says "only the dogs I want to have here are allowed here" is the best one!!!!

Just be advised that sometimes dogs do behave like ... dogs!!!!!!
And there is NO way to ask a dog not to bark when you are schooling or training or simply riding for fun... :sigh:

I ride at a barn where there are at least 4 dogs and once the great St Bernard (she is nice I like her when not riding) just decided to come over to me while I was distracted, long reins, no stirrups... just relaxing on my horse... :o

To make this story short... I ended up with my horse looking down at me asking "what on earth are you doing there mom?"

ouch.... :nyah:

You know, I sounded horribly pissy and sue happy in my first post on this thread. I do love dogs. I don't mind the well-behaved ones that stay at their owner's side.
I don't necessarily even care if they bark.

What I don't like are the dogs that are off-leash and run around everywhere: Tearing of to heck and gone...or digging in the bushes on the side of the arena where no one goes (it's just a small area between a turn-out and the ring. Some trees and shrubs are planted there, but there's not room for anything else). Or the ones who roll around fighting (for real or not) next to the arena. Or the ones that just roam anywhere they please and the owner has no idea where they are or what they are doing. Or the one that races around the arena to be at the closest point he can be to his owner while she is riding. Or the one that ate all my horse's treats out of my grooming bag while it was in my tack room on my trunk (dog doesn't even belong anywhere near there). Or etc.

Good dogs don't bother me and won't get me hurt. It's the ones that are not under control that I take issue with. My horse is fine with dogs...even lets 'em walk right under him with no objection. He doesn't however, take kindly to the racy raucous kind of dogs...and those always seem to be the kind that the owners bring out 'to get rid of its energy.' I'm sorry, but don't ruin my ride 'cause you're too lazy to exercise your dog properly.

At the barn where I work there is a well-behaved little JRT (well-behaved being a relative term of course) who lives on the property with her owner. She's always on a leash and is not a problem. The trainer's dogs are at the barn all the time but are ALWAYS in the trainer's office if they're not on a leash. But there is one dog who belongs to one of the barn's clients who is allowed to run around without a leash and is always barking menacingly and charging up to people like the dog owns the place. I can understand a dog being territorial on its own home property, but it really gets my goat that this owner thinks it's safe, okay and YES, EVEN CUTE!!!!!! that this dog gets very aggressive with anyone he meets. It's so not cool, especially with all the little kids running around. Ugh!

So I think it's great that the OP is putting her foot down and banning dogs. Sorry your puppy got hurt!
