Obviously I should have asked the vet while she was here!! Was grooming my TB mare in preparation for the trainer to ride her and found a small puncture/cut on her neck, but lots of swelling. So no ride, vet call instead. It looks worse than it is, so we're lucky and will go around the barn and barnyard with a hammer pounding in anything that is sticking out. She's on SMZs & banamine.....and cleanse w/ soap and water twice daily. What type of soap would you use? Unfortunately don't have anything special here at the house today (I have liquid hand soap, liquid dish soap, facial soap....that's about it...) What should I buy for my first aid kit? Thanks!!! |

Any soap is good for tonight. See if you can find an anti-bacterial one..but I'd go and get what OL suggested...I'm fighting "Greasy Heel" and have my Betadine solution in a spray bottle..get the area wet, spray, work in, rinse...you can be done in minutes..Depending on the location of the puncture..you might not need the spray bottle..but legs on down..I would..Good luck with it..as you know, puncture wounds can turn into a nasty situation if left alone...I'm glad you found it and called the vet out..Hope it heals quickly for you..HH

Last summer one of our horses got a nasty 1" deep punture wound in his shoulder. Since it was so deep, we called the vet out immediately. I was really surprised when the vet specificially said not to use Betadine scrub. Her opinion, Betadine was best for surface abrasions. What she recommended was plain ol antibacterial soap, flush well with a water hose to rinse, pour peroxide into the opening, and finally stick the tip of Neosporin into hole and fill it with the ointment. Good luck! It didn't take long for the wound to heal. |

Thanks everyone! The "puncture" isn't deep but still considered a puncture, probably about 1/4 inch deep...if it wasn't for the crazy swelling I probably wouldn't have even called the vet. But she had swelling about the size of my entire hand, starting at the puncture (near her mane) and straight down; raised about 1 inch in places. Definitely looked scary and I'm glad I called the vet. The main concern according to the vet was actually flies and dirt, so that's the reason for washing. I will start w/ the antibacterial soap (which is what I did already) but also get the betadine. Sounds like it's something I should have on hand for minor injuries in general; had my riding lesson tonight so I asked my trainer and she also swore by betadine for all sorts of minor scrapes and cuts....definitely something to add to the med kit. Thanks for the support! I guess it's not bad for my first "emergency" vet call!

I'd go with a normal anti-bacterial... Betadine is really hard on open soft tissue.... |

I mix betadine with warm water till it looks like iced tea. Compress it, seems to irritate less then actual washing. Surround the wound with SWAT to keep flies off. |

I've always just used Ivory dish soap to get punctures clean and then do the peroxide/neosporin just as Touchstone suggested, works really well. |
