Chain and Spike Nosebands On this page is a pic of both stud and chain nosebands, as you can see they are on the inside of the noseband, they really aren't very harsh,no worse than a curb chain. |

Oh - and then the purpose is....? I get a curb chain, that the bit brings into action with reining back, but these are on the caveson that does not move with bit pressure???? NOT flaming - trying to learn. Thank you!! |

To keep some horses from pulling, it is used with a standing martingale. My old guy wore one, he would lay on the martingale - he needed the martingale, he hated any bit that acted on the poll or his chin (so no pelhams for him and we tried them - broken mouth and rubber). He went in the regular workings when they really were 4' -4'6" and he got prizes, so it worked. If he laid on the thing it hurt his nose, when he got off of the martingale it stopped hurting, you do not crank down an abrasive nose band. They have total control of how much it pokes them. |

They also help keep their mouths closed. The chain or studs provide a little bit more 'bite' when the horse tries to open his mouth. Plain Bay - I knew a lady who sewed a chain in to the noseband herself. She got the chain, leather needle (curved one), and thread at a hardware store and it works just as well. I would have done the very same thing if I hadn't wanted to keep a good noseband without the chain. |

bevals can put a chain on a nose band, I bought a second noseband, and had them put a chain on it. Not sure if they can do studs, but they will make a crank too. The chain noseband when used with a standing martingale, if they pull they will hit it, otherwise it does nothing. The control of the pressure is in the horses hands so to speak so you don't get into a tugging match if they are rushing or hauling you to a fence. Not the end all be all, but another tool that may help. |

Thank you Kikki and Seal Harbor. I see now. Makes great sense - the horse punishes himself, or not. I am educated now.

I used an Edgewood chain noseband on my mare to keep her from opening her mouth. I did not use a standing martingale by the way, as my purpose strictly was to keep her mouth closed. I would put the noseband on looser than you normally would so the only time she felt it was if her mouth opened. After a few uses it got to the point where I just needed to school in it sporadically. She also went with a plain french link snaffle, I personally wouldn't use one with a strong bit. |

What are you trying to accomplish with the stud/chain noseband? I bought a really cool thing from Jay Shuttleworth at Devon that prevents a horse from crossing his jaws and it works GGGRRREEEEAAAATTTTTTT. I ended up putting my chain noseband back in my bridle bag and pulled out the plain one, and this new gadget works WAY better. Little odd looking, but the horses really don't seem to mind it (and if it were at all a problem, my sensitive guy would let me know) |

In addition to the above reasons for using one, a chain or tack can also sometimes have a focusing factor on a distracted type horse. Sort of like a twitch or lip chain, just makes them pay that much more crucial attention to their job. It can also make the difference in backing off a slightly ready one in a case where a more severe bit would be too much. |

Beval...as others have suggested. I used a dull studded band on my old TB who would get heavier and heavier on course. Instead of increasing his bits and getting into tugging matches, my trainer stuck the band on him. I jumped him in it for maybe a week...issue stopped entirely. Went back to a regular nose band without issue. |

I'm so glad to have TOC, any other board and we would've gotten majorly attacked for a question like this.

very interesting and educational!
