I was just curious, when do you guys first bathe your foals? Is it ok to start rinsing them off when it's really hot?

I have already been sponging my little girl, she's great about that. We hosed mom off and she was very curious about it, but I wasn't sure about weather I should try to get her used to it yet.

Mine like being sprayed with their mommies....it must feel good, then a good rubbing to finish them off!!!!!!! they got butt scrubbed with soapy water for the first week, so this is no big deal.

My little one HATES the hose..and runs when he sees me coming..his brother was the same way..I guess I will have to wait until it gets really hot to hose off..by then, he'll LOVE it..I do know to start at the hooves and work your way up...slowly..if she likes it now..it should be no problem..and as far as washing her..maybe use a mild soap..like Ivory??? I don't think that will "hurt" her in anyway..good luck HH

you know how some human children like the bathwater really cold and other's don't? if you can adjust the temperature, try to figure out what temp your horse likes.

and with babies it's best to start with a sponge bath before you go to the hose.

I always bring my mares into the wash stall, before putting them in their stalls, and give them a hose down on really hot days. The babies seem to like wandering around under the hose and get to like being rinsed off at an early age. I don't force them to get wet, just let them start to wander through the water and learn to like it. A real bath with soap comes later in life.

We start washing our (or at least hosing) as early as possible (weather permitting). One person holds baby and the other person bathes. Person holding gets a nice bath too! The breeding farms Ive worked for were the same way; bath early while you can control their reactions.

It's getting soo hot,,,....for so long.....When I hose the mares, the babies would wander around and get sprayed,,,......but today!!!!....they were both hose hogs. They would back up into the spray, drop their head and let it rain off their neck and head..chest, bellies, butts, legs, everywhere.. ..they found a new love in life besides butt itches. They were drenched and cool, they got toweled and put in the stalls with mom and a low speed fan......I had happy clean cool kids! they even put their face in the hose when I fill buckets......scheez :psycho: :psycho: Smarties!

We start at a few days old with just bathing the crappy bums that will get a little messy at first and then during the foal heat sometimes for a day or so they get crappy on their bums and we wash then too. Never too early to start.

As far as a full bath that would depend on weather more than anything. A Jan foal would not be getting baths until May, but then a May foal might get one right away..so I would say it depends mostly on weather.
