Thanks everyone. Elvis and Cassie are at Davis. They are in seperate stalls because they do not want him to nurse. Elvis's blood work came back with everything within normal. The ultrasound showed an umbilical stump abcess but they do not think that is the cause of his severe pain. He is on Naxcel for the infection. The ultrasound also showed a lot of gas, his abdomen is very swollen. They xrayed but found no twists. They do not give anything for the gas - he has to work it out on his own. The main vet was not convinced that the gas is the source of all of the pain. They are going to run more tests. He is getting IV fluids and will stay seperate from Cass until they ca determine the source of the pain. I asked if it was ulcers - the vet thought no. I requested they put him on GG just in case especially with the Naxcel and pain meds. Hopefully they will. I am also hoping they keep milking Cassie regularly so she does not dry up. It was sad seeing him thrashing around before the vet arrived here at the farm. He would just keep rolling back and forth - over 30 times. Then he would stop with all 4 feet in the air and stay that way for a minute or so and then begin rolling. The vet had me give him xylazine while I was waiting for him to get there. That seemed to control the pain for awhile. The vet tubed him and put soap/mineral oil in rectally also. Within 40 minutes he got up and started to pee normally and went to nurse. He nursed good and the vet was hopeful. Then he went down and began the rolling again. So we loaded up and headed to Davis. I have a cam in the trailer with a monitor in the truck so I could keep an eye on him. He rolled most of the way, occasionally doing the upside down thing. He was down with both front legs up on top of his head when we arrived at Davis. The prognosis is guarded at this time. They need to discover what is causing the pain and if it is the gas what is causing the gas. I suggested (boy were they sick of me!) that perhaps he was sucking in a lot of air when he was nursing because he does not make a good seal when he suckles like a 'normal' foal. You can actually watch/hear him suck in and swallow air with each gulp of milk. The UCD vet thinks I am crazy. So that is where we stand. Cassie is out of her mind because Elvis is not with her and she is spraying milk all over the place. She is so nervous she is a sweaty mess. Elvis just whinnies for his Mom and looks tired and confused. It is heartbreaking. I will update when I hear anything. Genevieve __________________ |

Aaaww, jingles for little Elvis and for his mom. Gee, the rolling and the laying there with his feet in air...those are pretty classic things that babies with ulcers do. I see a baby casting itself in the stall a lot or lying upside down, my first thought is always ulcers. Good luck! Keep us posted. |

He is home. http://www.marestare.com/glenhilltwo.php They diagnosed it as a gas colic. He is also now on ulcer meds (and a ton of other things!) Cassie is so happy to be home. Elvis seems to be doing ok. He is actually playing a little in the stall right now. |
