I hope some of you experienced stallion owners might be able to answer my questions. As a lot of you know, I have a TB stallion. He's been bred live cover only so far. The first time with a professional handler, the next time he handled it all by himself (field breeding) and then this year, he has covered a mare with my hubby handling him and me handling the mare. He's been good and not difficult to handle each time and he has an exceptional temperament as I am a first time stallion owner and he has been a total joy. We have another mare coming in about a week for live cover and I have received an inquiry for shipped semen from another MO. I was planning on taking him to Equine Reproduction Concepts in Amissville and have them handle the collection, processing and shipment of the semen. Should I bring my stallion to them ahead of time for phantom training as he has only been bred live cover up to now? Or would it be reasonable to expect them to be able to collect him and train him on the same day? I'm trying to keep my expenses down, but I want to be sure to do the right thing by the mare owner also. My stallion raced and also has had some professional training in dressage and jumping, so his manners are good. |

Call the clinic and see what they say. If he was always a breeding stallion for the racing TB, he may not take to collecting. I know my old stud was always live cover and when he was trained to collect we could not use a liner. I would call the clinic and see how they are and you could use it as a way to test his semen. See how long it lasts cooled this helps for the shipping part. our stallion was trained to collect on the ground there was no phantom or mare for him to mount, made it very easy I could do it all by myself.
If I had it to do all over again this is what I would do as well, just let mare owners know that they have to pay the clinic for those costs. |
