My horse has a swollen back. I do NOT believe this to be a serious issue. At first I thought he might have rolled on a rock, but upon examination there is no sign of a rub, scrape anything. He is extremely prone to allergic reactions. He breaks out when he has his annual shots and it has been hypothosized that he is allergic to the silicone coating on a syringe needle. This very well could be an allergic reaction to "something" however he has no other hives anywhere.

I spoke to my trainer last night (she is at a show) and she wondered if he could have been bit by a spider? This is a possilbility. I know when I have been bitten I get a huge whelt and it is itchy and painful at the same time.

Petie is not really showing any signs of discomfort, but when I went to curry near it he raised his head to "watch" me. This is right where the seat of my saddle would be so until it goes away I can't ride him. Today we are going to give him some Dexamethasone (yippee another needle lump), it is going to be administered about 1 hr before I get to the barn. I hope to see "some" improvement.

Here is where I need ideas. IF this is an allergic reaction to something, he is going to have this lump for a LONG time. Everytime he gets a shot he gets a lump where the injection was for up to 6 months. I treat the area with topical DMSO and Dex, and it helps takes it down to a hard lump. I am concerned about this becoming a hard lump because that could cause issues being ridden. I was wondering if anyone has had any success with something to remove inflamation? My vet once prescribed Preparation H, and it worked unfortunately too well. Petie is a chestnut TB, and it got rid of the lump and most of his hair and skin. The vet was floored, he had never had that reaction. So any other ideas would be mucho appreciated.

Thanks

Surpass works great on horses as a topical anti-swelling. Its in a tan box about the size of wormer. Its made for horses and you can get it in the catalogs I think, if not, vets normally have it or they can get it.

Liniment might help too.

You could probably call PenVet or another distributor and see if they have something hypoallergenic in the way of needles.

THANK YOU for the idea of calling Pen Vet about the needle! I have tried a few places with no luck. I work in a hospital you would think this would happen in people too.

Thin skinned chestnuts. Gotta love em :P If this doesn't start to shrink Surpass could be a good option. At least I can lunge him. I want to ride though. As I said my trainer is at a horseshow so his "timing" isn't too bad, won't miss any lessons.

I've seen horses with swollen spots on backs (usually caused by Bob MArshall Treeless saddles and BAD riding :pissed: ).

USe a large ice pack (frozen peas) - on for 15 min, off 10, on 15, off 10 untill swelling subsides.

Poor horsie.
