Please, please don't use web halters on your ponies and horses...........especially on your foals!

So very dangerous.

I have seen some horrible things happen to babies that wouldn't get away. Foals are so nosey and put their heads everywhere. Be a good owner and use leather only, or at least a break away poll piece.

Thanks! :)

By web, do you mean the nylon halters that come in all different colors? We don't keep a halter on anyone here...only used for the farrier visit, vet visit, or training.

virginiabred, I hope nothing bad happened recently to cause you to post this!

I must agree, if I use a nylon halter I make sure it has the breakaway strap on tht top, or somewhere (I actually usually find them easier to break then all leather). I was always taught only to trailer in leather or breakaway never nylon. I was reminded of how nice leather is today as I was grazing my one pony before I rode him, and he stepped on his lead and pulled his head up and his halter broke, since it was all leather. I have to get it fixed, but better then getting him fixed. :o

I use leather only on all my horses. A halter is cheap to replace, your horse isn't.

Too scary.. nylon is too strong, never breaks.

And, Tom forbid, in the case of barn fires, nylon web halters can melt onto your horse's face from the extreme heat. At my old barn, we had a funny old gray Trakehner mare who had this happen to her, and the only way she saved herself was by double-barrel kicking out a barn door.

Her face was scarred and the fur was permanently gone where the halter had melted onto her.

OK..Gonna say NO Nylon without a human very nearby...Mine goes to the washstall ONLY....
Saw an "Incident" one day..
Noseband got caught..Halter did NOT break away as there was NO pressure on the poll
Also saw a huge draft cross back up to a tree and get up on his hind end only to scratch his back on a tree..
Poll piece got caught on a branch strong enuf to suspend his front end
Ever try throwing a kid with cutters into a tree behind a panicking Draftie???
She got the poll piece cut, but his mane??? Took Years to grow out.....

I've been around horses for a long time...and always used nylon halters, except for shipping. Never had a problem. And I don't like the breakaway side pieces as they give to easily and teach a horse that it can get out of a halter.

My horse only wears his mylon when he's in my control, but he's the type the gives to pressure. If he steps on his lead rope, he'll just calmly move his foot off...no fuss. All cross ties are safety breakaways.

In situations that have the possibility of getting ugly, the leadrope snap breaks first anyway. And I would NEVER turn a horse out with a nylon halter on.

Yes, something unforseen could happen, but there's not guarantee that a leather halter will break either.

I wish they wouldn't even sell them without breakway crowns. Unfortunately we all know there are far too many clueless people in this industry that do in fact leave nylon halters on their animals 24/7!

I have seen pros and cons to both leather and nylons. Sometimes its good for the halter to break, sometimes its not. If a horse gets caught on something and the halter breaks freeing them so they dont kill themselves, thats a plus. If horse is being walked and steps on leadrope and breaks halter and gallops off into the road, thats not good. If horse rears up in trailer and halter breaks and horse flips over backwards and gets stuck, its not good.

With either caution should be used. But I do agree that horses should never be turned out in anything but breakaways or full leathers.

We personally have seen a few near misses, and just the other day we had a welsh pony cross tied. Something scared her and she broke out of her halter. An easy replacement as opposed to something happening to the pony.

I hate, hate, hate to see foals in web halters. And I've recently seen pictures of nice babies in them. Makes me wanna cry. :brickwall: :sigh:

Virginiabred, when Quinn was about 7 months old she was out with the other babies. My dear Quinn is highly motivated by food. :cheer: She "somehow" got her head completely twisted in the old style hayfeeder (all since replaced) and hooked her nylon halter on something. She fractured her jaw and tried crawling into the feeder in her panic. The damage was quite frightening. She has since obviously repaired just fine BUT never did get one of her top teeth. We refer to her as Terry Thomas. :cheer: My youngsters now go without halters when outside.

Ditto that. My babies are either out in leather foal halters or nothing at all. I did have a nylon made into a breakaway foal halter for one foal (replaced the crown piece with leather for about $10). I either use leather on my horses or nylon under supervision. I've seen some pretty scary wrecks when a horse got hung up in a nylon halter.
