Our new gelding holds it. <_< I mean he'll hold it for a loooong time. I am seriously worried about this.
We camped out this weekend and he held it from Friday night trailer ride all night till we took him off the picket at 10 am to ride. And then he wiggled around the trailer till his bumm was behind it and let a gusher go. Same again till we let him eat grass in the evening. And then he held it all night again. Now this can't be healthy. I tried to put down some hay as a toliet, then some sawdust. Help!!!! Bashful MUST tinkle!!! |

Not much help here. Maybe try some electrolytes. They'll make him have to pee more (he'll also want to drink more). My horse isn't bashful, but he won't pee if you're on him. And he always wants to pee before and after every ride. I swear that horse holds it all day in his stall just to wait until we ride. He can pee two or three times in an hour and a half if he puts his mind to it. I'm half-heartedly training him to pee when I whistle 'cause he does the 'walking around, stretching out, walking some more, stretch, walk, stretch...then pee' thing that is annoying. Get it over with, damn it. He's not fun to ride when he has to go, you can feel it in his back, so I figure the sound stimulus of the whistle will help him focus and pee sooner. |

They do get electrolytes (gaited horses, going 10 or more miles per day right now). He peed when we tried him out on the first ride - we stopped for a break and he streached right out and went. We gave him bonus points for doing so. He's only peed under saddle 1 other time (and we give lots of opportunity - my mare will pee 2 or 3 times in 10 mile ride - once right when she steps off the trailer), and the first time we picketted he peed on his dinner hay. So this time I put his hay in a hay bag - and he held it. So we put out a hay toliet - no luck. How weird is this? I do think he was stall kept before we had him and he is looking for a walled, enclosed toliet. I've seen the walk and look for 'the' spot horse - this one just seems to want no one to see his equipment..... Hmm, maybe we should try the whistle thing. |

My first mare was great about holding it while she was in at night and then leaving her stall first thing in the morning to pee. Kept the stall nice and dry! She would poop in one corner as well - really easy to clean her stall. I only wish she had taught her babies the same thing. |

VA that is so weird - my mare does the same thing (well, she's not locked in though). She'll leave her stall to pee and poop. Unless it's raining, windy, or buggy. Then she poops in a corner and will usually leave to pee. |

I housesit for a mare that pees anytime you approach the barn. She hears you coming, goes outside to pee and then comes in to greet you.

Tip used to be exactly the same. He would not pee in public. He needed to be in a stand of trees, or in the trailer, or behind the trailer, where he didn't think anyone could see him. Lately he has gotten over this and will stretch out and go in public, but only if I am holding him. Other people he will hold it and patiently wait until he is alone. Luckily he doesn't seem to care whether his bladder is empty or full. |
