My beautiful 'problem child' (long story) Reilly has had an accident in the paddock. We don't need to panic as it is not a life threatening injury but he's managed to cut his face. He has a gash that is probably 1.5-2 inches long with a v shaped nick at the top on the bridge of his nose. I have not been able to take photos as my batteries are flat :brickwall: but I will attach a photo of his head with an illustration showing where the injury is.

My worry is the swelling. I have been bathing the injury four times a day. His breathing is not affected and whilst it is obviously a little uncomfortable, he is not worried about me treating it. I have also popped a gloved finger up both nostril and they are definitely not swollen in any way. He has also had a shot of intracillin for infection and the wound is very clean and appears to be knitting nicely. I haven't got my vet out as weekend callout rates are painful to say the least and when I spoke with him he said that it sounded like I could treat him quite easily - I mean in the broad scheme of things, it is really just a scratch. When I first spoke to him however it had not swollen as much and now he has a large bump on his nose!!! He has such a pretty head I am hoping and praying that this swelling will go down - it is quite hard as well. I will def get the vet tomorrow, especially if the swelling is no better/worse but wondered if any of you guys have had a horse do anything similar and, if so, did the swelling go away??

One of my stallions has a dent in his head from an unfortunate kick from a mare and although it is not all THAT noticeable, I know it is there and he has such a pretty face that it makes me sad to see it so I am really hoping that my precious wee Reilly is going to heal up bump free!

Ugh, horses! Who'd have 'em??

Here is a pic to give an idea - I have batteries charging so will return later with photos of the real thing. Reilly is the little bay.

Thx guys :)

Darn Colts are always into something. Just keep it cleaned and dressed, and it should be fine in no time.
One of our best colts that was on tap for some line classes this season, saw fit to bound through a large snowbank like his dad. "Unfortunately he slipped, and came down under the board fence, severely injuring his front leg from just below the knee to the fetlock, and about 2" wide". :argh: (Amazing he did not break the leg!) The wound is slowly starting to close, but still looking very swollen. Never really taken a lame step......but unfortunately, although otherwise a very tall & Handsome Fellow..... :sigh: No longer a Halter Prospect. :censored:

Thanks Lynda :)

I feel a bit silly being so vain as ask for jingles for my horses pretty face when there are so many horses more deserving but the bump makes him look like a rhinocerous!!!!

Off to take pics and clean him up again shortly :)

OK, I have photos - The swelling has (I think) gone down a bit. It is quite hard to show the cut as it is closing over nicely but the lump is fairly obvious.

My problem child did something like this several years ago and to my dismay her French TB head looked like a roman nosed draft horse. She had run into a corner post and forgot to turn her head.

My vet said she would have the swelling for a while as it takes awhile for those to go down and he had me rub DMSO into it daily ( she hated that) and to give her some Bute for the discomfort. She looked just fine after a couple of months. I don't know that I would wash that area as often as you are as you are only aggravating the area but I could be wrong

Thx for that - The bathing was only initial and now that it seems to have healed cleanly, I am basically leaving it alone. I am about to go up and check him to see if things have changed at all overnight... I will talk to the vet about DMSO. I have heard of it but never used it.

MY old mare did that! (pinched her nose in b/t the lid of her auto waterer)

It took 5 stitches and it left no scar - and yes she swelled up like a water balloon, too.

Jingles sent your way!!

Thx for your jingles :) The swelling has pretty much disappeared and now the scratch is in the process of healing. I have to remove the scab every few days and give it a clean to remove the pus and put a little cream on it but am hoping you will hardly be able to notice soon. He is a little bit nose shy right now although incredibly obliging considering it must hurt him. He is such a sweet little guy.
