I rode Somerset for the first time Sunday. He was (of course) an angel under less-than-ideal circumstances.

1. I was sick as a dog and I strained a muscle in my leg at Devon. I therefore wasn't bringing my A game, or even my B or C game.

2. During the ride it was pouring, with thunder and lightening, so his first ride was in the indoor (I doubt he's been ridden much in an indoor lately). We have a really loud, spooky indoor when it rains.

3. My saddle is an ok-but-far-from-ideal fit. Shane's bridle is too small in the browband and reins. So we had some tack issues (went to Dover and I think we're cool now, other than the saddle which either I'll have widened or get a new one)

4. At the moment, Somerset goes out in the little quarantine paddock. He'll go out in a large one, with some other horses, but not for a few more days. Plus it rained so the horses stayed in. He's not getting a maximum amount of turnout time and nothing like what he's used to.

So... it should have been a spooky and difficult first ride.

It wasn't :) :cloud9: He walked right into the indoor, I got on, I walked him one lap during which he gave the evil eye to a few things. After that it was like he had always been ridden there. He just trucked around.

I only rode for about 20 minutes of walk and trot, because I was exhausted and didn't want it to be anything but a positive experience. He was PERFECT!

Oh, I'm so happy for you and Somerset!! Sorry I didn't get online until now, but it was great to read through the pages and see all the pictures all at once!

He's not tall - he's freaking HUGE! And what a handsome guy! Many many years of happy riding to you.

(Oh - and I agree about it being the year of no-show volunteers at Devon! WTF was up with that?)

And the long awaited riding pictures... please excuse the quality, Joe was trying his best but I don't think the professionals have anything to worry about anytime soon, their jobs are safe ;) ...

Hopefully you can see that I'm beaming!

And not so much that Somerset was dripping with sweat... it was KILLER hot here today. I only walked him around the fields and trotted a tiny bit, but he was sweating even before I got on.

He got a nice LONG hosedown and then out with his new buddies when he was done :)

He does sweat a lot. Kind of a pain in the winter. (May want to consider doing some sort of clip job in the winter). He looks great though. Look at that HUGE trot!

vfx111, wonderful to see your riding photos, sweat and all! You both look very happy together. I have a question: in the first photo, what are the starburst patterns on his neck, top of shoulder and one a little lower?

I think its something with her camera. Some of her other pictures are the same way.

I think it's the fairy godmother sprinkling fairy dust on Somerset, because he's so good I feel like he might turn into a pumpkin :)

Just kidding...

The digital camera used for those pictures isn't all that great. When it starts to get a little dark (it was nearly dusk when the photos were taken) the flash illuminates any little dust particles in the air and they turn into those little sparkle things. It generally happens with pictures taken in the indoor, but if it's overcast- it happens outside too.

I have *got* to crack into the new digicam Lion1029 and circuspony got me. I have been so BUSY. I RESOLVE to read the manual and get it out this week.

In the meantime, more riding pictures from today...

I LOFF this horse. I could not stop smiling or patting him during the entire ride. He is so sweet and just wants to please. And I LOVE his big canter and trot. He is like a dream come true. When I walk into the barn I always have to look twice at his stall plate because it doesn't seem real that he's mine. :) I am so lucky and grateful!

P.S.- He'll definately be clipped and blanketed this winter. I measured him and know his size, so I can start collecting his wardrobe :)
