We have a bit of hair loss and itchy skin back there from the foal heat runs. We have been putting the pink zinc oxide stuff on, but is there something better?

She loves to have the ointment put on... it soothes an ichy bum.

Any other suggestions?

Well, the best way to prevent it all together it si worm your mare the day she foals, or no later that the following day. We do the foaling day. No scour bottoms at all.

If you do have it, absolutely clean the foal's bottom and put vaseline, or desitin or mineral oil on the rump.

I will sometimes just scrub the butt cheeks off thoroughly and vaseline the problem areas to keep the messy stuff going on by. But pink butt cheeks would work too, especially for a little girl. :)
Ditto on the worming.

What VB said. I always deworm with Ivermectin within hours of birth. No problems with scours.

Vasaline or Desitin work well though.

I worm after foaling but tend to still get babies with a teeny bit of moist poo during foal heat.

WalMart makes a generic A&D ointment for like... $1.50 a tube. I use it VERY liberally including the tail :)

You know I worm 24 hours after birth too and don't have problems anymore..well usually. I have one this year that did get a crappy ass during the foal heat that went on and on for longer than most with the foal heat. And usually it is not too bad but this one was my exception this year and bio sponge was not even stopping it until I did the highest dose of 60 cc two times a day and then cleared up for the most part. We have added gastro guard as well....I believe my spring grass is so lush that it is the cause of the crappy ass. :o

That happened to us occasionally also and worming earler (within several hours of the foaling) will cure that. :)

She's only had the poops when mom's come in heat, no other time. She still got a bit of a rash back there.

I clean it off with Nolvasan in some warm water and slather on some vaseline. If you need to stop the runny poos, try some Stomach Soother. Works better than ProBios and foals like the taste. I just syringed it straight into Minx's mouth and the runny poos were gone by the next day :)

Oh and I have a funny story... My vet was showing me how to clean off the poopy behind and I took the sponge from him and said: "I've had three kids ... how different could it be?" He laughed and said: "You're the expert!" :P
