My gelding, my 18 yr old TB gelding is not himself. He is eating and drinking fine but he is not staying with the herd. He gets upset if he is not with the alpha mare but the last few days he is not going out with the hard. There are 9 horses and they have about 20 acres split into two fields. Well they go out to the far end of the field and he stays up close to the house, is spending more time laying down sleeping then what he use to do. It is just not like him and I am worried that he maybe telling me that he is getting close. I am not ready to let him go, I have had him since he was a coming 4 yr old. He is my one and only horse, you know that once in a lifetime horse. When I was out in the field tonight he just did not have that spark that he usually does. I had blood work done on him 2 weeks ago when we did the coggins test and all came back fine. I am just so worried about him I don’t think I am ready to put another horse down. Thanks all I just needed to let it out. |

18 is not that old. Maybe you need your vet back out to check your boy over. Could have a virus or maybe an abcess coming on. Good luck and best wishes for you both! |

I agree that it's too young to just be "old age" and nothing else. I have an "at least 29" year old QH at my house right now and he's old....but not ancient. Definitely call the vet and see what they have to say. Maybe arthritis or an abcess? Hope he gets better soon! |

I agree. Have your vet out again for a more thorough work up.

Big He's still quite young. I don't know about up where you are, but we've had such terrible pressure changes in the last few days down more south of you.. it's been upsetting everyone. I ended up in *emerg* (sheesh) b/c of a really wierd thing that was probably air-pressure-change related! So hopefully it was only that type of thing for him; as he gets older he feels it more. |

Hope he feels better soon! Just a thought: when Avery (22 y/o TB) hangs outside of the herd, it CAN be that he doesn't feel well, but it can ALSO be that he's trying to tell me something else, e.g., "there's something wrong with our water out here" or "there's a dead deer at the other end of the field" or something like that. Did you walk the fence line & check stuff like that? |
