Fly Sprays; The best one is?

Fly sprays available in Canada suck. IF the company can be bothered - and most can't - to change their formulation to meet Canadian criteria they go from having a decent to excellent product to one that sucks. :pissed:

This morning my poor horses were running the fields at a flat out gallop. The gnats were so bad they had clumps of them on their bodies and they were bloody. The Cdn products that I put on them helped for about 15 minutes and I had to spray again. I had a bit of TriTec14 left over from last year and one spraying of that has worked all day. BIG difference.

So for my next venture over the border fly spray is at the top of the list. Any recommendations for products that have worked for you? How often (in general) did you have to reapply and what kind of insects do they work on?

Thank you.
Thank you very much ...Elvis

I like to rotate fly sprays. It keeps the flies on their toes (assuming flies have toes. :P ). They adapt so quickly to fly spray!

My favorites are Pirahna, Tri-Tec, and Bite Free. The Pirahna comes in a spray bottle or aerosol can. In my experience, the aerosol spray works best. Maybe it is just my imagination. The Bite Free is good for larger flies, i.e. botflies and horseflies. I generally reapply everyday, and I think it helps to keep the horse really clean. I like to brush the fly spray into the coat and tail.

Flies are icky. Good luck! :)

The barn I worked at used Golden Mauldrin for flies. Now, that is not the spelling. It was Golden Something but Mauldrin is how I heard it. You put it on the aisleway and the flys landed and died. It worked. BUT it was highly toxic.

It also attracted raccoon and killed them dead on the spot.

I dunno if it is available in Canada - and I am not so sure I'd use it myself.

Ahhh here it is:

And its MAULRIN

Now, nats, I use Farnum roll on on the tasty parts of the horse to keep those off.

Can you guys get fly predators up there? This is my first year with them, and so far, I'm quite impressed. My older horse has uveitis and the flies looove his bad eye, even when it isn't weepy, but so far I have barely seen a fly on him anywhere. I think I managed to put the bulk of the predatos in his paddock and fewer in my pony's paddock (where it's wetter, natch), so there have been a few more flies there, but not what we were used to dealing with.

I used to always spray in the morning when I fed, but it seems like no matter what you use, the flies were always back thick as thieves by evening feeding. Good luck.

I LOVE Endure. I use a very tiny bit as my horse has sensitive skin and it does a fantastic job. It also lasts through sweat and builds up to last for up to 14 days. Good stuff. I go through about a bottle and half for all of fly season.

I also think the Tri-Tec is good stuff, but it's more expensive, so I stick with the Endure.

You could try feeding garlic, which is suppose to keep the flies away, but I don't know much about it.

My favorite is the Equyss Marigold (I think I spelled that right). Works great and smells oh so good.

I like Nature's Defense - smells great and lower on the strong chemicals - but you probably need more firepower if the bugs are that bad. DEO Lotion (I think that's the name, it comes in a bright orange bottle) is good stuff, although it smells like...bug death, I guess.

Equiss Marigold up here is actually "Equiss Marigold Canadian"!

So, yes.. we should technically be able to get that this year. I"m hoping to try some once my Ultra is gone. Ultra used to be so good then it started giving half the horses hives, and doesn't seem to work so well anymore <_<

Other thing.. there is one small brand in Canada.. WISH I could recall the name. About $35 a bottle but apparently works very well. Some sort of marigold blend. LIttle private boutique type company.....

I mix several..
Usually Ultrashield with Deo and skin-so -soft.
But that stays in my groom box
Too$$$ to leave on a stall door that's next to the Fave crossties....
For that, Pyranha....

Mane Defense. It's all natural, smells like s***, but works really well. The smell doesn't stay for long.

Mane Defense should smell like marigolds. :P

Two parts cedar oil, one part vinegar, one part isopropyl alcohol. Fill the rest of your sprayer with water. Shake before each use. Works like a charm and doesn't irritate skin.

I agree -- the Eqyss Marigold smells wonderful, but it didn't seem like enough when the flies got really bad. I used to swear by Repel Xp. It comes as a concentrate that you reconsititute with water. It worked really well but seemed to irritate my TB's sensitive skin. It didn't bother my Appendix QH at all. I switched to Tri-tec 14, and it seems to work really well and doesn't bother my TB.
