Depo and my mare

Hi-I'm a lurker that needs some advice!

I have a 10 year old mare that I show in the A/A's. I keep her at home and before this year would trailer alone to shows (meet up with trainer), no problems. She can be a bit spooky at the end of the ring and I have been advised before that depo or regumate could help her, but I found with enough riding, a warm up class, and quiet riding she levels out as the day progresses.

This year, I've been taking along a stable buddy, not one she gets turned out with, but a young mare that has zero milege and tends to be herd bound (actually, my mare is too, but older and broke so she gets over it). The two of them constantly look for the other, whinny a lot and get very upset when separated at the shows, not to the point we are out of control, but enough that it disrupts our showing. Even when I leave the buddy at home, she still talks to any horse who is whinnying and is more interested in the other horses, especially mares, which she never had before. Like I said, she is not throwing fits or escalating to the point I can't ride her, stays rideable and all that, just whinnies and looks around. So, once again, I'm being advised that depo.

Money is tight, so I don't really want to try something that may not benefit her. Does anyone have ideas, suggestions or similar experiences?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know if it would help with the separation or calling to other horses but my mare is on a depo and regumate combo that helps with the spookiness that she can sometimes experience.

You may want to start with just one and see if that helps. A bottle of Regumate costs me about $250 and lasts a few months. The depo runs between $250 and $400 depending upon the strength and I get 4-6 shots again depending upon the strength. Either won't hurt, you just have to find the one that works best for her.

Good luck!
