Anyone know anything about any good horse-related graduate school programs? I don't think I could quite hack it in vet school (o-chem=my worst nightmare), but I am interested in studying something related to overall horse care and health. Seeing as these programs may not necessarily be "mainstream," I thought I would tap in to some of the expertise on this board...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks in advance :)

There are plenty of equine graduate programs out there, all with strengths in different research areas. Can you narrow your area of interest down a bit? "Horse care and health" is very broad!

Well, I think that narrowing my area of interest is part of my search...I'm just not sure what is out there other than vet school and a few programs at larger schools.

What's your undergrad in? I went back after my undergrad and became a registered vet tech. Granted, it's not exactly a money-making field, but it's satisfying and it pays most of the bills.

You could also pursue animal behavior. I know U Penn has a good school for that, and they have the feral pony herd at New Bolton.

Virginia Tech has graduate programs in Equine Nutrition. Might want to look into that.

The Vet school here also has graduate programs, and you take some of the vet school classes, but track a different grad degree.

My undergrad is in International Relations Theory...I know, not exactly a related field...I know whatever I go into, I will probably have to re-take some math & science pre-requisites.

What was the process like for becoming a vet tech? I would love to be a vet tech at a large animal clinic that specialized in sporthorses - like Morven Park or Piedmont...

Piedmont is the vet we use at my barn, I'm thinking about talking to my vet and seeing if maybe I can shadow him for a day and see how I like it...

Obviously, this would be a major career change for me, but what I'm doing is just not keeping me happy. I find myself constantly frustrated with the minutiae of working in the corporate world.

I have an email in to the director of the Equine grad programs at VTech...I love that the research extension is right down the road from my barn!

There was a girl at the previous barn that I was at that was in her last year of the Equine Nutrition program. I do know that she was at the MARE center for a while up in Leesburg.

If you want her email, let me know.

The following schools have active equine graduate programs. I'm sure I'm missing many schools, but this should be a start. Go to the University's website and search for "equine" to find out about the programs. In no particular order...

University of Florida
University of KY (Vet Science and Animal Science Depts)
University of MD
Texas A&M
Rutgers
University of GA
Virginia Tech
Cornell
University of Minnesota
NC State
Colorado State
UC Davis

Also, take a look at the program for the Equine Science Society meeting this summer. Topics for posters and presentations are listed, along with where the research was conducted. PT me if you would like specific information on programs at UK, UMD or VT.

That meeting looks cool, Absolut - thanks!

I often think about going back to school, but definitely not for what I majored in, so I'll keep this thread in the back of my mind - useful stuff.

Yep, I feel the same way...the whole IR Theory thing was sort of a result of parental urging that the horses should not be a career for me. Yet here I am, just a few short years later, and I would like to chuck my degree out the window! <_<

I majored in Classics (yup, Latin and Ancient Greek), because I liked it. Except I don't think I'd like to spend the rest of my life studying and teaching it, and there aren't really any other options along that career path. DOH. :brickwall:

Horses are my #1 love in life, so my long-term goal is to figure out a way to use the skills I have (writing and editing more so than riding and training, unfortunately) for something horse-related. And go to grad school for it. And then find a fulfilling job that I can do well. No concrete plans for that yet, though...
