I can FINALLY post some updated pictures of my perlino TB filly that I bought from Red Fox Farm a month or so ago. She was as woolly as a polar bear up til now, so wasnt much sense in posting pictures of her looking like that! Plus she lost some weight on the trip up here, so she is finally looking good now that the hair is leaving and the weight is coming back on once again ...
and some "fun" ones as well ... ![]() and: ![]() She is a REALLY big girl and should finish in the 16.3-17hh area, and initially we will be breeding her to Guaranteed Gold (cremello TB stallion) which will give us a 100% guarantee of either a cremello, perlino or smoky cream foal. We already have the first foal pre sold to overseas interests and then we will see where it all goes from there ... as to whether we continue that cross or start looking into WB registry options for her as well ... I am SO pleased with how she is turning out and she is such a nice people friendly filly as well! |

What a cutie patootie! More pictures!!!!!!! She's lovely! cant wait to see her babies. Just curiously, what does smokey cream look like? And what exactly makes up a perlino? As opposed to a cremello? I clearly see the difference in colour, but I'm curious genetically....I know its tacky to ask so many questions re: colour, but since she's a less common one, i'm jumping on the opportunity! haha |

Perlino is a double dilute bay as opposed to double dilute chestnut for cremello. The perlinos have an almost orange tint to their ears, mane and tail. I'm not sure what smoky creme looks like. That would be interesting to see... I may have to research! |

Okay color people, I have a question (it might be a dumb one, I don't even know). The Paints have a gene issue called Lethal White which is fatal within (I think) hours or days. I'm not really sure what it is, and what is the difference between that and albino? And does breeding for these dilute colors in the TBs carry any associated risk of any genetic issue like that? Just curious, as I have no breeding experience but color genetics fascinates me. I'm much more familiar with the stock breeds and didn't know cremello TBs were possible until I came to this board! |

Lethal White is a gene that only comes with the Frame Overo gene. A homozygous foal from Frame to Frame breeding would be lethal white and die. Albino does not exist in horses. Cream gene has nothing to do with lethal white. First of all you have to make a difference between color and pattern. Base color of horses are chestnut and black. Then there are the modifiers like f.e. grey (making all colors grey by the time), agouti (to make a black horse bay). There are dilutions to the COLOR, which are silver dapple, dun, cream, pearl and champagne. Then there are the PATTERNS which are the spotted patterns like Appaloosas and Knabstruppers and the Pinto/Paint patterns like Tobiano, Sabino, Splash White, Rabicano and Frame Overo. The only one to result in a lethal white foal is the homozygous form of Frame Overo. Hope I got that all right in English. |

Thanks Gwen and Angela for explaining those 2 questions / answers! A smoky cream should look VERY much the same as the cremello or perlino foal. I have asked this same question before on a colour board - will I know - visually - for 100% certain what I have when the foal is born, or would I need to do DNA tests and everyone said that PERHAPS - if you had a cremello, perlino and smoky cream foal born at the same time and lined them all up in a row, PERHAPS you could tell the difference visually, but no - I would need to send the samples in to get tested to know what I was getting for 100% certain ... GG is Aa, Pearl is Aa and Ee, so the colour possibilities for the foal are:
So based purely on statistics I *should* have a good idea of what is coming!!!

Well - from looking at these pictures that Gwen sent to me, I think that smoky creams are my favorite colour among all of the double dilutes. They are beautiful and have such a gorgeous metallic sheen to them!
![]() and: ![]() Now ... the trick will be how to figure out how to get one, when the odds are so low ... Thanks Gwen!
Oh geez ... how could you forget?! I whine about being broke all the time, between buying her and the ***other*** purchase(s)!   |
