Hello, Does anyone have experience with an injury (strain/tear) to any of the patellar ligaments. I've searched and searched the internet and I'm finding very little information. If I understood correctly, the technolgy to detect a tear or strain to one of these ligaments is fairly new - maybe that is why I'm unable to find anything. Any information on rehabbing, outcome, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!!! |

Ultrasound has been used for many years - I think this is what you may be thinking of.... single and double contrast arthrography (type of radiograph) has been recently used to detect abnormalities in tendons, muscles, meniscis (sp) etc. |

But - the athrography is probably only available in your large 'more advanced' equine clinics (New Bolton, New England Equine, etc) |

Thank you MissBri, Ultrasound was used to identify this injury to the middle patellar ligament. From what I gathered, the ultrasound has become 'more advanced' and now can be used on this ligament. It sounds like injuries to the patellar ligament were not detected until recently and the injury was thought to be something else. I'm hoping someone will respond that has experience with an injury to this ligament and if it healed OK, how long the rehab was, what type of rehabbing, etc. |

I spoke to the vet and was told the prognosis is good. More will be known regarding the rehabbing time period once he is ultrasounded again at the end of the month. But, the vet expects a full recovery!!! I thought I'd share what I learned from this experience and I realize it may not work for everyone or in every case but ... #1- if my horse is lame, I will make an appt with the vet immediately - if it is a tendon or ligament injury it is best to know ASAP #2 - I will not work my horse harder until the lameness becomes more apparent (unless instructed by my vet). In this case, my horse didn't appear lame, it was felt more than seen. I was afraid the vet wouldn't see the lameness but a well trained eye can. #3 - bring the horse to the clinic for the lameness exam. If the vet had come out to the farm, I would have had to bring him to the clinic the next day anyway. And, my vet's clinic has several different surfaces for the lameness exam. |
