OK, I've tried this question on every horsey forum I can think of - to no avail.

So I appeal to you, my fellow Thongpenders, to help me retrieve the Crucial Lost Data from the depths of my ever failing memory...

Once upon a time when I was about 10, back in the 1960s, I got a horse in who had a terrible infestation of ticks on the dock of his tail. Called my trainer in a panic and asked what to do. She said to go to the drug store and get a bottle of "X" ("X" being of course the Crucial Lost Data), dilute it in water, soak the dock in it once a day for a couple of days, and it'll kill the ticks and they'll just drop off.

So I did. And it did. Worked like a charm. But WHAT the Tom was it??

All I can remember is that it was a cheap substance that came in bottles LIKE those of witch hazel, iodine, peroxide, and so on. Turned white and smelled nice when diluted with water.

Anyone remember *anything* we might have used?

I have not actually ruled out the possibility that it may have been witch hazel...??? An oldster on an ASB forum suggested it might in fact have been Pine Sol, not ruling that out either.

But if this rings a bell with anyone, PLEASE do post!!

We had a pony come in that had ticks and yes, it was a cheap bottle, dilute w/ water, apply....

CRAPTASTIC

That just ruined my day. Now I feel old and Alzheimer-istic. :brickwall:

We cover them with a glob of Vicks Vapor Rub. Was that it?

I'd think witch hazel would be great for soothing a bite, but never heard of it working to kill off ticks.

OK, so I'm not hallucinating, someone else besides me remembers this, at least!

All I remember about ticks is that my father would hold a match to the ticks on my dog and essentially burn them off. Or was that just a bad dream?

Anyway, I'm not recommending holding a lighted match to your horse's dock. Unless, of course, you plan on pushing the 'fart button'.

Rubbing alcohol works on them too. I think it goes through their exoskeleton and does something to their nervous system? Anyways, they generally drop off relatively soon after being given a good soaking with it.

Yep - got to be the same stuff.

It couldn't have been rubbing alcohol, could it??

Or Pine Sol??

Honestly, I've racked my brains over this for years and can't come up with it.

...Animal, vegetable or mineral? :innocent:

Seriously though - Liquid. Definitely liquid.

It came in a bottle like peroxide comes in - you diluted it w/ water - smelled nice. Then you just soaked the dock and it killed the ticks & they dropped off.

It could conceivably be Listerine, but my vague recollection is of something stronger, which you *had* to dilute before you could put it on the horse.

I really am starting to wonder if it was Pine Sol. Whaddaya think, DQ????

Not mineral oil?

I don't know why you'd dilute that, but I have seen people douse ticks on dogs with mineral oil to "drown" the ticks and get them to release.

Having lived in tickville (AKA Rhode Island) for many years, I have concluded that the all time best way to remove ticks is carefully with tweezers to ensure you get out the biters. All the dousing, burning etc. is just not as effective as combing through the hair and spot removal with tweezers.

Ugh, hate ticks!

Small world. Rhode Island is where I lived when my dad was getting ticks off the dog.
