All right, please give me any and all info on trunks. I know they're heavy, but I really prefer wood ones. I certainly won't be buying anytime soon, so I just want to get an idea of what's out there. Please let me know about all price ranges, and what you prefer and why.

Also, has anyone tried to build their own? I'm not the handiest person out there, but I can follow directions pretty darn well. Is this the least bit feasible? Thanks so much!

ETA: Anyone know anything about this seller/their items?

My dad made my trunk! I love love love it! It was a decent project, but I think if you had good directions it wouldnt be that bad. I looked around at tack shops and catalogs, then drew up plans and measurements and we went from there. I used Oak veneer plywood bc it made the overall trunk lighter but we used solid oak for the trim.

Lets see if I can post pics. Its basically the same measurements as Dover trunk (I think its 24x32x24 but Im not sure. I can fit a saddle in it just fine. Unfortunately, its at my parents house bc I am across the country in grad school. =(

Ooooh Jersey Fresh, yours is pretty! That's exactly what I'd like, just with a removable brush box and hopefully a bandage rack/box thing in the lid.

2hs, thanks, I will!

We bought our's from Phoenix West. At the time, we were with a trainer who required each client to be self sufficient so we needed lots of storage space. We bought their large version with vinyl sides and stainless steal top... and yes, it's heavy. HIGHLY recommend having wheels attached.

It's large enough to hold everything... saddle, small wash bucket, wraps, wool cooler, rain sheets, tool box.. everything you'd need to horse show for a week.

If we had it to do over again... we'd buy the smaller size Beval tack trunk. It's beautiful and has storage space without over kill.

I have a large wooden trunk with a bandage lid made by Oakcroft, from Dover. I've been very pleased with it! It's quite handsome and holds everything I need, and I'm going to make it absolutely perfect this summer when I put a few hooks in the side of the sliding tray to hold bits.

I had one built for me like 8 years ago by a hobbyist woodworker friend of my dads. It's big and super heavy, but I love it. It used to be a very light wood finish and this past winter I sanded it down and re-stained it dark.

All he charged me was the cost of materials - $300 I think.

Just remember; if you get the bandage lid, it leaves you no room in the lid to expand into, everything must lie absolutely flat in order to close the lid.

I've made a little hobby out of renovating abused tack trucks, bandage cases, aisle boxes, etc.

I did a HUGE lovely one that I found in the barn here when I started working. I sanded it down, repaired and renforced all screws, replaced the hinges, closures, handles, etc. and repainted it blue and white and stained the natural wood on the inside. About $50 in supplies and a broken forgotten truck had its value back. I also have all the extra paint and such, so about every 6 months, I steal it back from the racetrack and clean and touch it back up.

I just had a smaller one given :o to me. It's in HORRID shape. Today I washed and sanded it. It's gross... I'm going to have to repair some rotten spots on the lid. But, otherwise it's a very nice truck. I'm going to paint it PURPLE and cream, lol. I got the paint today and the folks at the store thought I had lost my mind on the color. I did spend $75 for supplies today because the idiots at the paint counter mixed up a $30 bucket of paint, not the $6.99 bucket I asked for... but maybe I won't have to touch this one up so much, lol. I have to paint the interior of this one as there is no timely way to strip out the paint already in the interior boxes... so I bought an epoxy spray paint that should be wipe-able.

I recommend if you are going to paint the interior of a tack truck you do use spray paint... but I am not artistic or at all coordinated.

I am going to put this one on wheels. The BIG farm truck simply DOES NOT MOVE when full... it's not merely heavy - it's stationary.

My dad made mine. All the kids in the 4-H club have to have a trunk for states to hold all of their stuff. They are all made by the parents. One of the dads owns a car restoration shop and he painted his daughters tack trunk with car paint and its held up so much better, doesnt chip, and looks 200 times better then the other ones.
