So, we took Wendall to a nice little B rated show yesterday. It's a lovely show, with friendly people. Wendall is 3 1/2 and is just learning to canter. So we enter the w/t, w/t/c and the 4 cross rails class (he jumps crossrails very nicely). They are pleasure classes, and are usually inhabited by two types, those that are true "pleasure horses" and those that are like Wendall - greenies that are learning. Oh, and a third, beginner riders getting their feet wet in the ring.

W/T went just fine, though with 9 horses in the indoor we were having trouble finding places to be because he is still...well...on the quick side at trot. Then the w/t/c classes happened. The first one we got boxed into a corner and nearly hit the wall. Oops. The second one, we were struggling to find a place to be, when we were headed directly for either a jump (set at about 2'6") or the judge. Wendall ducked out to the right and very nearly ran over the judge.

Needless to say, we didn't pin very well in that class.

He was tired, so then when we went to the cross rails class, on our second spin around the crossrails, he tried to duck out the ingate! We nearly took out a whole slew of people. I was laughing so hard I could barely navigate him around the second time.

Oops!

But, he doesn't stop, he doesn't balk, he's very game for everything.

However, I don't recommend running over the judge. They tend not to like that.

We'll get steering better installed now that we're actually getting canter. It was very hard to teach him to canter, he just didn't want to go. I think he was convinced he couldn't do it. Now I have to get him to collect because flying around the ring at Mach 11 isn't any good. And though he does lovely half-halts at trot and we can trot 10 metre circles, at canter he completely ignores me and forgets how to steer. It's almost like he is working so hard at continuing the canter that he can't ALSO steer. *laughing* Yes, we'll be working on it, and now that the weather is nice we'll be able to canter in the fields more, which he will enjoy. I just hope I can stop!

It is good to have Steering 1.0 installed before the 1st show - also Halting 4.0 and Reverse 1.5

How wonderful that you were able to laugh about it - kudos to you. I know some folks that would be peeved. I much prefer dealing with adventures like yours with humor.

Been there, done that. Had a judge that picked a REALLY bad spot to stand (on the quarterline, basically at the only spot to ride through if someone else was taking up the rail).

Also had the non-steerer. Show always looked WAY more broke than he actually was, so it lulled people into a false sense of security. His favorite trick was the right shoulder bulge. I'd be trying to turn left, have my right leg massivley on, left rein would be open and his head would be just a tad overbent and we would continue moving right. Almost took the trainer out once or twice. :P

Heh - my sympathies. I've had that happen twice, neatly bookending my show career... :P First time was in the early 1970s when my very green OTTB ditched me at the first fence on a real outside course and proceeded to jump the judge AND steward, who were seated atop a hill under an umbrella!

Most recently was TOTAL pilot error in 2004: Saddle seat adult eq. class at a big "A" rated ASB show. (Remember, please that at ASB shows the judge has a box in the *middle* of the ring.) WA's quick-trotting little schoolie is fast catching up w/ a clump of slower and far more stately horses. WA knows she needs to circle and get a better rail spot.

WA has a brain fart and does Two Bad Things: One, she forgets that WA's Schoolie has little to no steering ability b/c WA's Schoolie is rarely if ever asked to step off the rail by any of its usual beginner riders; and Two, WA forgets to take a look and have a plan before she starts her circle.

You can see where this one's going, right? :)

Turns out judge has stepped out of judge's box to evaluate riders at closer range (probably to check a bit or something) and WA damn near runs the poor, er, blighter straight down!

Blew my up-to-then undefeated show season, too!

I'm sooooooooooo goooooooooood!

Two good things, Oakesbrae...Wendall *didn't* run over the judge and you ended up laughing. :-)

DairyQueen, do you know where I could buy Half Halt 2.1? We've got the Half Halt 2.0 (trot edition) installed and running pretty well, but I need the upgrade to the Half Halt 2.1 (canter edition). Perhaps there's a canter half-halt button I'm supposed to press, but I can't find it!

This was EXACTLY our problem. Duck to the right, run over the judge. Duck to the right, almost take out the crowd at the ingate. The right leg gets completely ignored even though I am POKING him with a big spur with my right leg. OVER DAMMIT HORSE!

:)

I'd like to know this one too. At the trot, I've got a half halt. AND steering. AND backing.

But at the canter? It's...well...interesting. A circle ends up being like a barrel racing turn. A long side? Well, let's just say it's kind of like a hand-gallop. *laughing*

Ahh yes, sooner or later you'll see us in the champion ring. Okay...later....:D

How can I not laugh? I loff this horse. And even though he was...well...a greenie in the show ring, I had a dozen people walk up to me and say "he is SO cute!!!" - yes, that's my baby, the cute one that can't steer :) He *is* only 3 1/2, I can't really blame him. He only JUST learned canter last week. We had some issues with believing that canter wasn't completely the devil's work.

I can think of a judge I would have wanted to run over <_< Back in the late seventies I had a greenie (3 yr old) we took him to a local show to do a hack and eq class. He had hardly ever been ridden in traffic. We did the pre green hack, and he was getting excited, there were several horses in the ring. Keep in mind I was just a kid at the time, not a whole lot of hack class experience. So they called for the canter the second direction, the judge kept us cantering and cantering... Hind sight being 20/20 I now know she was watching and waiting. She knew my horse was going to blow, and she kept it going until he did. He went down to buck, then changed his mind went up to rear and smashed me in the face. BLOOD EVERYWHERE! As soon as he blew she lined the group up and started pinning while I was still bleeding. I bit half way through my tongue and had a smashed nose.

I always thought it was a judges job to stop the class BEFORE accidents happen.

My baby grew up and the the judge of his second horseshow bought him.

I have seen judges do that too, in short stirrup or similar classes. it really gets my goat "oh, I'm too lazy to actually judge. I'll just canter their legs off until some of them either knock themselves out by breaking, running into other ponies, or blow a fuse." Grr...

I announced for our schooling shows this weekend, and so was in the ring with the judge so that could announce the commands. During the short stirrup, there was this big pinto draft cross who was wayyy too much horse for his poor little rider. The horse kept dragging her towards us--thinking we had carrots, perhaps? He nearly ran over us several times.

And then there was the little girl who took the "make the judge see you" edict way too literally, as she spent half the class spinning around us in a 20-foot circle. The judge finally turned to me and said, "I'm getting dizzy. You?"
