He was big, bay, a lovely mover, a total puppydog, and quiet quiet quiet... but there's a "but" and a BIG BUT... I can't recall the last time I was this disappointed. Even getting taken off with on unbroke horses beats this... We fight horrendous traffic to get there. Horse is in his stall lookin' cute. "Trainer" (who is probably 19/20 and seems nice but very inexperienced) puts him in the crossties. Horse doesn't seem to want to step over, but maybe he's just grumpy about personal space. Tacks him up and walks him out to the ring, I watch him walk out.... toe drag, toe drag, toe drag... something is NQR. She gets on, and immediately even at the walk I turn to Julia and say "what's up with his hind end." She starts to trot HEAD BOBBING LAME. She doesn't even notice and continues on. Canters. He can't step into it because he's so off behind, he has to trip into it with his front end. I see plenty of crossfiring and tripping. Trainer trots into a small x and he trots off, she says "see, he's still a little green and doesn't really know to canter off a fence." She gets off, says "do you want to try him." I say "he's really off in his hind end, I think there's something wrong or at the very least he needs hock injections. He's not sound right now" She seems GENUINELY SURPRISED TO HEAR THIS.... She's the pro, I'm an ammy-- who is "professional" here and supposed to be the expert. I get on, just to see--- and the horse is SO NOT COMFORTABLE in his hind end. Shane would not have been trucking like that, he would have been bucking people off. The horse is not that green, I ask for bend, and roundness and I get a clear response "I know what you're asking, I just CAN'T do that right now." I ask him to move out, he does his best and clearly understand what I am asking. Horse knows plenty but just cannot do it. He's trotting off the fences because he can barely push off to canter! He can barely get his hind end over a crossrail, because he cannot flex the hocks at all. I get off and tell her the horse is just way OFF behind and I really can't even think about a horse in that condition. The worst part.... the owner is a VET STUDENT AND HER DAD IS A VET AND THEY LET THIS LOVELY, WONDERFUL TEMPERED HORSE GET SO FUNKY IN HIS HIND END THAT HE CAN BARELY CANTER-- AND THEN SENT HIM OFF FOR TRAINING AND TO BE SOLD IN THAT CONDITION! I told "trainer" that if vet-student owner wanted to get films of everything behind and pay for injections, at her cost, I would have my vet look at them. If all that's going on is hock arthritis, I can accept that and don't mind some maintenance and then I would consider taking horse on trial. If she won't do that or there's something else there-- forget it. I am sick and tired of this ****crap****. I don't get upset when I show up and the horse isn't a 10 mover, even if the seller told me so on the phone. I understand, that's a bit subjective. But to not tell me the horse is LAME... or to be so inexperienced that you can't SEE the lameness? Unforgiveable. I am a sick of that crap. Then we got stuck in 3 hours of traffic coming home. |

oh no! i am soooo sorry to hear that. i had a similar experience when i was looking at horses...very cute 3 y/o TB mare, sweet, cute mover, etc, but dead lame right hind. when i told the trainer that she looked "off," she treated me like an idiot. needless to say i didn't go back to look a second time! have you looked at bascule farm in poolesville, md? i don't know a ton about them, but from what i heard, the trainer has a good reputation and i remember them having a bunch of young ones when i was looking. are you still going to look at dazzle again tomorrow? he's awfully cute! so is baby QH.

I am more disgusted with how this good guy has been treated than anything else. But am way tired of wasting my time. Way tired. I might see this week out and then take a break from horse shopping for a while. |

Sad but true, there are too many people in this industry that clearly can't recognize an obvious lameness :-( Poor guy, it brakes my heart that he wanted to be such a good boy for you even in his condition ... Someone needs to get him out of there!!! |

I always send a thank you note after I try a horse, no matter how bad the experience/seller/horse was. I am finding this one more than a little difficult to write... |

You know, manners are great, but I think it's perfectly fine not to write a thank-you note to someone for showing you a lame horse.
It's a bummer because this horse is lovely, and such a sweet guy, and it just seems like no one bothered to take care of him. Why not sell the horse BEFORE turning him out with a herd of cows and letting him fend for himself for a year?

I am really disappointed FOR you (and the horse). I know the right one is out there and I truly hope you don't get too discouraged. Buying a horse is NOT easy.

All I know is that I can only dream of owning a horse that nice. And I would never treat ANY horse that way. It's a sin.

vfx111, soooo sorry to hear about this...his photos are/were so promising. What a shame. And sad that he was trying but unable to do what was asked. Write your "thank you" note; perhaps your comments to them will make them realize they can't sell an animal that's lame and they'll do something right for him (but it doesn't sound like they want to admit there's a problem). Cheer up, the right one will come along. |
