I am also continuing to browse ads in the meantime, and I am going to a sales barn this weekend as well-- to see 3 (only 2 of which do I expect to be serious contenders as the 3rd is too young, gray, and a mare [ 3 strikes ]). I'll keep y'all posted.

Also, in random news, I called Laura Chapot and didn't know it. Didn't figure out that was the "Laura" whose cell phone I was given until later when the seller was talking about her trainers, the Chapots, whose number was listed in the ad. Wowwee! :)

The seller of little black horse didn't call me yesterday, which is odd. If I haven't heard from her by noon today, I'll be giving her a call.

So far Saturday I have 3 horses to see at a sales barn (including gray baby mare who is not coming home with me! :P ). I potentially might have another to see Sunday (of Laura Chapot fame) but it depends whether the buyer who is seeing her today puts a deposit down on her. I would like to re-see little black horse this weekend too, if I heard back from the seller.

vfx, I'm gonna throw in my two cents about something to watch for with the short-backed horses (I happen to think he's cute as heck, btw):

Even if your saddle is a non-fit, do yourself a favor and put it on him just to see where it's sitting in terms of his last rib. Some horses with short little backs like that can't wear a saddle larger than 16.5" or 17" because the back of the saddle is resting on their muscular system instead of on the rib cage. And in a short-backed horse, that can mean back soreness in a big hurry. Sometimes you can get away with something a little larger if it's got upswept panels in the back (like a Stubben) or something with a forward flap that's going to take up your leg. My poor friend who is 5'7" and long-torsoed is learning this the hard way with her 15.3 guy who is absolutely gorgeous but very short-coupled. She tried damn near every saddle on the planet and pretty much the only things he can wear comfortably that also put her in balance are an Amerigo Close Contact with a custom-ordered forward flap ($$$) and a Hennig dressage saddle ($$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!). And yes, she did try Stubben/Prestige/Kieffer/Pessoa/Black Country/Duett/Bates/Wintec first hoping to get a budget option going--but to be fair, some of the battle was about the short-coupling and some of it was because this horse has a very weird Warmblood-type wither on his little short back.

I say this as the proud 5'5" owner of a 15.3 horse (if he's on an incline), so I am definitely not against the little guys. But as you mentioned that your saddle is a definite non-fit with this horse, it's something to keep in mind if you buy him and have to saddle-shop for him.

Going to see little black horse again next Thursday :)

I don't think he's so short backed, that the saddle fit will be an issue that way. My saddle is a wide Jaguar that the saddle fitter WIDENED for my TB (he's a tank). It's more an issue of the tree being too wide for all the horses I try, rather than an issue of the saddle going too far back on the spine. The saddle is WIDE.

If I need to get a new saddle once I buy a horse-- I am A-okay with that. But in the meantime, I am holding on tightly to my Jag because I LOFF it-- even if it is too wide for most of the horses I try.

Maybe if you don't refer to him as "little black horse" then you won't feel he's small. I think if you like him get him. You don't look "unsuitable" on him, and besides there are plenty of professionals that win on horses they are WAY too big for! Not to mention kids that are in the process of outgrowing their ponies and still win ... I hope your next ride on him goes well :)

Which horse? My fatty is a TB with Private Account lines. By Mattress out of Puzzles and Amazes. The black horse (no longer to be called little  ) is a hano/tb by Dullegrantz (sp?) out of a TB mare. :)
