Tried this horse today and really liked him.

Julia was with me, she didn't think I looked to big on him. I didn't FEEL too big. But I am kind of on the fence when I look at the pictures? Am I too big on him?

He's 16.1 and a hano/tb but just not a big guy. He's young, so I think he'll fill in a little when he gets hunter fat-- but he's never going to be a WIDE horse.

Thoughts?

I know my equitation is horrendous. Yet another hideously uncomfortable saddle with stirrups that didn't go short enought for my weenie legs. *sigh*

Your legs definitely isn't too long on him. How old is he? I think that once he is stretching and in more of a frame that will make a difference and like you said once he fills out and muscles up more. What did you think of him other than that? I personally always feel like I look tall on horses!

He's a pretty horse with nice forward ears and an interested eye. I think that he looks like he will make a lovely mount - anymore pics? If that's the only thing that you are unsure of, which I do not think that you two look disproportionate (sp?) I say go for it! Good luck! Please keep us posted!

I think you will look just fine on him once he relaxes and uses himself better. I think you look okay right now too. :)

You know what? I'm just kind of meh about him. Maybe it's his head carriage but I dunno...he needs to use his back and neck better and looks to be a so-so mover. Is he everything you have been looking for? Don't settle. You look fine but I'm just not sure i *love* the over all picture. I think you have a long torso and he just has a weak topline so I dunno...

Just my honest opinion though. ;)

It's not your leg I'd be worried about, it's your upper body- you have a tall torso. Did you feel topheavy on him?

Ugh, I have an incredibly long torso. It's ridiculous. I am 5'7 and the person who rode him before me was 5'1 and the stirrups had to go UP for me.

He's 6.

He moved really good when he relaxed and rounded. Aside from the horse that didn't vet, he's the best mover I've seen so far. Unfortunately we didn't get any really good pictures showing my size as compared to his body except for this one. Also, he is a dressage trained horse. He doesn't know at ALL how to go as a hunter. He either wanted you to package him entirely, or he sort of fell apart. Which is okay, he felt like a very quick study and I think would learn, but that photo is me trying to let him carry himself a little.

I didn't FEEL topheavy. I felt okay. But then again I ride a 14.2 pony most of the time. So maybe my feeling is a little skewed ;)

For comparison, here's me on Stoney (14.2) and Shane (16.0+). I always felt every so tiny bit big on Shane. I am clearly too big to show Stoney (except in bareback sit a buck, LOL). I feel as though the black horse is a bit bigger even than Shane.

Me on Stoney (14.2)

Me on Shane. Honestly, I think Shane is 16.0+ but I can't say for sure because he suddenly developed a bizzare fear of the measuring stick and won't let me get anywhere near.

Okay. I LOVE you on the pony!! Nice long neck and he has a thick build. The bigger horse doesn't have quite the big and thick build the pony has but I still like him better than the horse you are trying.

I am still just kind of *meh* about him. Can you go back and try him again? See if he can figure out what to do with that head. I would just like to see you on something thicker like a full warmblood or big QH type.

I'll share my story. I bought Miller a year ago. He's a 9 yo Hanoverian, 16.1. I'm 5'5" and pretty well proportioned leg to torse wise. When I first bought him, he wasn't in optimal condition. He needed a few pounds and a ton of muscle.

Like the horse you tried, he also was trained in dressage and couldn't figure out what to do if I wasn't heavily engaged in getting him framed up.

I thought I looked kind of big on him at first. But a year later, he's packed on the groceries and is in great shape. I saw some pictures from our horse show last week and I feel like we're well-proportioned for each other now.

So, just a thought. I think you'd look very different on him with a few more pounds on him and some better muscling.

Another thought...his neck looks pretty thin. Perhaps that's giving the illusion that the picture isn't as balanced as you like.

Actually, I think he's really cute. Other than the size thing, how did you like him? Did you jump him at all?

The pony is the best horse EVER :) So no other horse can ever hope to come close to the awesome perfection that is Mr. Stoney.

The black horse I definately have to go try again. Seller was so accomodating and nice. Suggested I come with my trainer and take a lesson on him. Which, if I decide the size isn't a dealkiller, is what I am going to do.

Black horse is in work but isn't working really regularly (does maybe 4 days/week and it's a mix of hacking out and more serious rides). He also just got through what they think was his last growth spurt. He's not skinny by any means. Nothing like skinny. But he's also not all muscled up and hunterfat either. Just sort of young-horse in light work fit.

I did jump him, and he was super willing and very rateable. I didn't do a whole course and the place I tried him today is a dressage barn and the facilities were limited. If I go back, it'll be at an eventing barn so they'll have plenty of jumps.

I tried him off property because they were having a steeplechase at the horse's home barn and it was insanity. Frankly, for being a baby horse ridden by a stranger for pretty much the first time, he could not have been calmer and more willing off-property.

I am just not that tall/big yet I find half the horses I try I feel a little big on them...

Posted Image

16.1 and felt WAY too big (and this is the award winner for MOST uncomfortable saddle)

Posted Image

16.2 and skinny but felt okay size wise. Passed because he's not as good of a mover or as fancy as I hoped to find.

Posted Image

16.3 but hugely wide and felt okay although maybe a little bigger than I needed. Passed due to bone chip in knee and because he was overpriced for what he is.

When the black horse drops his head, I'm sure you'll look better on him. You look good on him, all over, but his head is a bit high, IMUnprofessionalO which kind of throws the pic off.
