My 17 yr old TB choked on Buckeye Safe 'n' Easy
OK so I mixed it 1/2 Safe n Easy with 1/2 with oats, 1 total quart. This time he choked so badly that the vet had trouble getting through the mess of feed in his throat! He had stuff coming out of his mouth and nose! No more Buckeye Safe 'n' Easy for me! Fortunately, he is OK. |

Do you soak the feed? I feed hay pellets...that are notoriously known for causing choke...so I water them down. A. LOT. I'm always amazed at how much water those things absorb. A three quart scoop absorbs enough water to end up almost topping off my 14 quart feed bucket. And then I think about what the pellets would be like to eat without the water. Can you say mouthful of saltine crackers? My trainer had three horses choke on the same pellets...until she started watering them down. I would imagine oats, would be similar with the water absorption. I've never fed the Buckeye (or even seen it) so I don't know about it, but sometimes...the way you feed something has a lot to do with how it is handled. |

Don't know if it is cold where you are now, but I have found that feed with alot of beet pulp plus pellets in it can get very clumpy in wintertime especially. For instance, I like Pennfield's fibregize, but switch to their senior feed in the winter and mix with warm wet beet pulp. I had horses that never choked before having problems with the dry fibergize. They say they adjust the formula for winter, but I haven't seen it as effective yet. Too bad, as both Buckeye and Pennfield are great feeds nutritionally and quality control-wise. i would suggest letting your Buckeye rep know your problem. It is a pretty responsive company. |

Did you feed the pellets or the texturized Safe and Easy? I was just thinking about trying the pellets.

As many on here know my guy choked on the Buckeye texturized Senior in Jan. His teeth it turns out were absolutely horrendous. So it led to the problem. That forumla did have beet pulp.. so the vet dentist said to water it down and he was fine. But I have since switched to the Buckeye Senior pellets as it has no beet pulp. Some say you should still soak all pellets... but he hated his feed all wet (weird!!) so i have been giving him it dry , so far he has been fine. But he dosn't gulp and i think after the intensive dental work he had, he is eating so much better. The Sneior pellets do look pretty dry and univiting, but he licks his bowl clean. I won't feed anything with beet pulp without soaking even after the dental work. Not saying your guy needs dental work, just saying I would look for beet pulp and soak it. Good luck.. Having gone through a severe choke only a few months ago my heart goes out to you. It is a really hard thing to watch. Good luck with his recovery. |

Thanks, for all the good suggestions It was the texturized safe n easy. http://www.buckeyenutrition.com/equine/doc...Texturedtag.pdf This stuff isn't really a texturized feed, it is pellets with a tiny bit of oats or barley! His teeth are fine, though he is coming up to his yearly checkup. The vet did check his teeth. He just tends to swallow any pelleted feed like that. He is doing just fine on plain whole oats, and with the spring grass he will be eating less. Buckeye changed a lot of their formulas, and this one just doesn't work well for my horses. Everyone else is now on Progressive Nutrition: Proadvantage Grass formula ration balancer. Soaking the feed is always an option, but making it easier for him to swallow his feed down might not work well. Fortunately, he does chew his oats. |

Choke is the worst thing! UGH! Sorry you had to go through it!! I have a mare that was starved (left in field in dead of winter with no food) when she was very young. I had a few episodes of choke before I figured out the best way to feed her. She would literally inhale her food. She choked on everything and I had to make anything I fed her soupy. Now I can pretty much feed her anything dry as long as I sprinkle some safe starch forage on top of it. Hopefully you won't have any more episodes!!! |

Sorry to hear your horse had a bad experience. We just switched our whole barn to the Safe N Easy (pellet not texturized) and the horses look fantastic. My horse gained about 75 pounds and for the first time ever I'm considering cutting her feed. The pellets don't seem any different then what they were on before, but I'll tell the barn owner to keep an eye out for choke. |
