Viggo (VincaMary's baby) was looking a little down today. I noticed he hadn't been nursing, so I called the boss right away. He said to talk to the vet at the local clinic. I talked to her and she gave me instructions about dealing with the dehydration and such, but I just felt weird and she says "you've been doing this! you know what you're doing!" and I said "I want to take him to a clinic" and she says "if he's not nursing, he's going to need major care". I said "thank you for telling me what I wanted to hear" and she said "no problem".

I call the boss, report and he gives the go ahead to haul out.

Now, the local hospital won't take babies or fevers, so I call Wisconsin Equine (http://www.wisconsinequineclinic.com/) and they admit him right away over the phone and help me figure out how to get there.

Load up, head out. It takes about 1.5 hours. Unload the baby.

Pneumonia. Argh...

There is about 3 cm of fluid in his check... Argh....

We have 24 hour watch here, so this is all insane to come up so fast.

So the prognosis right now, it's pretty bad. If he lives, he'll never race.

But, you must understand, this little guy is special.

His mom is 24. His dad is 25. His mom's first colt was gelded and turned into a good stakes horse. Her second colt was not gelded and died tragically as a 3 year old from liver failure of all things... one of the best 3 year olds my boss ever had. Then she had a bunch of fillies (one of whom was a stakes winner, another produced a stakes winner). Then she was open for two years... then she had this baby... a colt... a LOVELY colt. Dad is Sabona, one of the four last living sons of Exclusive Native... a GI winning racehorse with no active stallion progeny.

We just want him to live :( :(

This is the little dude in happier days:

Sending TONS of jingles for your lovely little guy. My 2006 foal wouldn't nurse and ended up at Morven Park for 4 days. I was worried sick about him, but I got a call on the 3rd day that he just jumped up in the middle of the night, walked over to Mom, latched on and started nursing up a storm :) He is now a big strong, healthy yearling. I hope that your guy does the same thing. Keep us updated.

THANKFULLY, he was nursing again by the time we left.

We ended up having to run out and find a Kent dealer since we feed the mare SO MUCH (she is old) and I didn't want to do a quick switch to Equine Senior (nor do I really want to have her on it at all...). Yeah, I can't drive in Wisconsin without "discovering Wisconsin" so it took us about 2.5 hours to drive 17 miles and back, lol.

Within the first 10 minutes they pretty much told us that he was on the borderline of being a lost cause. But during the draining of the fluid in his chest, he rested his head on the doctor's shoulder and pretty much endeared himself to everyone.

Today they called my boss and said he is "holding his own" and starting to talk about how long he'll need to be there.

It's still going to take a miracle, but the miracle is looking more possible.

I just want to say that Wisconsin Equine ROCKS... I've heard TONS of wonderful things and they're all coming true.

Of course, talking to someone who had a horse there for 8 days... we're looking at $5-8k... :o Of course this baby is worth it and more to us and we're happy to pay it.... but it makes me glad that I never got some bizarre idea to get myself a mare and breed her!
