Okay, big time brag here, but I am so proud of my stallion AND my hubby! I have a small farm and basically I run the whole thing by myself. I stand a TB stallion, so live cover is a fact of life and I could see myself having to bring in someone and pay them to help me handle my stallion for live cover. This would take a chunk out of my modest stud fee and is not ideal. My hubby is not a horse person. He is a great guy and fixes fences and even built a small barn, but did not get involved with handling the horses at all. But, he decided that he would start working with my stallion on a daily basis and took over taking him to and from turnout. Then when a mare came in for breeding he volunteered to be Stud Manager :) He was great! Indy really likes and respects him and got the job done properly and safely. He also helped with teasing, but we used my gelding for that. I'm lucky in that I have a gelding who is a turnout buddy for the stallion and a great teaser, but gets along fine with Indy. That is my stallion and gelding in my avatar. Indy is the chestnut. It is such a relief to me to have someone right here to help me with this stuff! It was so cute when I caught hubby outside later giving Indy a carrot and telling him "Good job, Son" :)

Be really careful. Using a non-horse person to handle a stallion during live cover may not be the best idea. Your hubby sounds like a great, great husband and a sure keeper...but PLEASE keep him safe. Handling a stallion is a bit much to expect of a Non-horse person. Non-horse folks just do not think like horse folks and in stallion handling may soon get in over their heads. PLEASE be careful.
It sure sounds like you have a supportive situation -- But please be SAFE. Even the best behaved stallion is still a STALLION.

It's so great that your husband is taking an interest. "Good job son", lol, cute. I'm gonna have to work on mine a little. He's good with a tractor though...

Glad to hear that your stallion has a turn out buddy. Mine is turned out with a pregnant mare and their like a happy old married couple.

Thats so great to hear Turtledove. We cant ask for more than a hubby that at least makes an effort to understand our sickness (horses) LOL :teehee: And its a bonus when they take an interest and actually HELP out with the horses!

Im lucky enough to have a hubby that is a horseman himself, and while he's great, knowledgable and very handy, being that he's a horseman himself actually sometimes creates problems - we're constantly butting heads. He's a racehorse guy, and Im a showhorse girl, so needless to say our ways of doing things often differs :shoot: Having said that, Im greatfull that he's there to help. We stand 3 stallions (two of which are Thoroughbreds who we do live cover), and we've figured out that everything goes much smoother (for us anyways) when *I* handle the stallions, and he handles the mares. The reason being, Im the one that handles the stallions on a daily basis so we have a healthy respect for each other, so it just works out better for us that way.

So really, you should consider yourself very lucky to have a non-horsey hubby that is willing to help out...and best of all, since he's not a horseman (yet lol) himself, he likely doesn't have his own opinions yet...something we all love in a man :one: Just kidding, for anyone who took that seriously. :teehee:

Yes exactly :) I think the horses are about the ONLY area where he allows me to actually know more about the subject :teehee: Indy is definitely better for him, probably because while I don't allow any bad behavior, I DO tend to spoil him with treats and scritches. We are very careful with live cover and indeed whenever we handle the stallion. I'm thankful that he is a very kind boy though. He'd be a gelding by now if he wasn't!

2HSM knows how to reward men! ;)

Good for you turtledove. It is great that your non-horsey DH is taking an interest!

When we are doing LC, I usually have the other person, whether it is my DH or another helper, hold the mare, and I always take the stallion, since I am the one who handles him on a daily basis, and I am the one who handles him to be collected too.
