Well Gunner earned his dinner last night. We needed to add a liner to the blankie he was wearing - the temps were to dip into the teens last night.

Mr. DQ wanted to blankie his own horse, so I turned to my precious to wrap her and look up to find the blanket around Gunner's back legs all tangled and the 2nd belly strap STILL CLIPPED! (Where is the heart attack emoti?) :jaw:

Its a newbie moment of truth - the wrap is very uncomfy, and the horse is ready to squirm or worse. Dave pats Gunner says "Oh I'm so sorry! There are TWO strapie thingies. Woopsie." and bends over to detach. :jaw:

I'm having a heart attack. :jaw: :jaw:

Gunner glances back goes *sigh* his head lowers and he stands rock solid while it takes Dave about 3 minutes to detangle the mess.

He gets it all off and unwadded and pats Gunner and says "Good boy."
Where upon Gunner does a tap dance with both hind feets.

I think we spent some money wizely on this one. <3

OMG! One of those Oh SH***TT moments. I can never decide if its better to try to help , stand like a rock so the horse doesn't feel he has to move, or let the newbie just learn as they go. While learn as they go sounds good, unless you love the person, of course

Good Boy Gunnar :cheer:

The Mr. DQ/Gunner "moment" is wonderful. Sounds like they have a unique understanding and it's going to work out fine. Hope you'll share some pictures of them!

Sometimes I watch Robert doing things with Dicey (BIG donkey that he's ridden just a few times) and I have many :jaw: moments, but I refrain from butting in because Robert gets PO'd at me so quickly. Dicey tolerates me but adores him. It's a toss-up because at times I'm almost certain he's going to get hurt, but Dicey seems to know he's learning and just stands there patiently with that "time for a treat" look on her face (even though the saddle's slipping, the bit's hanging in her mouth, whatever....). They'll figure it out.

Good boy, Gunnar! I'm so glad you bought him. He sounds like the *perfect* horse for Mr. DQ.

Did you get him re-shod yet? Is he still tripping?

There was not enough hoof left to get him reshod - what we did do was add bell boots, NOT ask for speed gaiting and reminding Dave to keep his horse's mind focused on task at hand.

So far no more trips!

And we are working on conditioning Gunner too - he's pretty out of shape and flabby for a skinney horse.
