Me too, La Gringa...

Yep, if you're doing that class, they go in together. You should do the foal class, too...but you'd have to have someone "attempt" to braid the littleun!!!

I most likely won't get anyone to handle mine, either...I just think it's good for him to go to a BIG show, get braided, and learn to stand around like a good boy!

Besides, I don't care if the judge doesn't think he's the bestest...I KNOW he is!!!! :innocent:

my filly will be 2 months old. She may not even have enough to braid at all! How in the world do you braid a foal??

Hee hee hee...notice I said "attempt"...if you were just doing the mare class it wouldn't matter...but if you're going to do the foals class it may...maybe someone else can weigh in here...hmmmm????

There were some foals with braided TAILS there last year. Don't ask me how they did that!

I braided 2 foals and their mommies for Upperville three years ago. The mares were great, and the babies, umm, interesting! You definately need one or two helpers to make sure baby stays still, but because they don't have much mane, it really doesn't take much longer than about 15 minutes to do, and you just have to willing to "move" with them when they get antsy.

I don't think I'd want to attempt to do a tail braid on them though... <_<

If you are planning to show at Upperville in the breeding I would recommend using a professional handler. It really can make the difference. There are good experienced show handlers like Bucky Reynolds, Billy Howland, Oliver and Mike Rowe just to name a few. They know how to show your horse to its advantage. They do this all the time and are well respected by most Hunter Breeder judges.
In Upperville and Devon you usually will see some of the top breeding stock in the country, especially on the east coast that time of year. Good luck and remember its not always the best horse that wins.

Is it relatively easy to find a handler at the show?? I could do that and then hold the baby myself while the mare is being shown, and vice versa. I noticed that the foals are held when they are in those classes. It's a two person job!!

As for braiding, I can braid pretty well myself, I will probably have a professional do my mare though. She cleans up pretty good, although right now she sure needs a good bath! :P

Most of the good professional handlers are set up way in advance. Sometimes they may want to see a picture of your foal and mare if they are not familiar with you. I would contact a handler now for Upperville and not wait until the last minute. It is better to be prepared and do your homework ahead of time. I gave you the names of several good handlers who read very well in Virginia. Good Luck!!!!!

You can probably find someone there for the broodmare or foal class. The pros aren't always booked up for these classes, since it is usually a little "iffy" about the moms and babies coming at all! But the regular classes for the older kids will definitely be booked long before the show.

I have gone every year to the breeding day (for the past 5 years) and this is the ONE year I am not going. Sigh.
Now LG - the baby class can be trying on a youngster - those mares and babies can stand around for quite a long time. I am not going to discourage you at all, but I saw one baby last year that flipped over as it just got too freaked out. And yes, there were babies with mane AND tail braided. Yowzer - hats off to those braiders!!!!!!!!!!
I think most of the babes were a bit older than 2 months but again, maybe 2 months, if mare and babe can travel, is almost easier as babe is still very attached to mum!

for ALL of you - the best of luck! I hope to come next year - handle my own for the sheer JOY of being under the trees with my youngster(s).

Yeah, maybe I will wait until next year for that. She will only be 2 months.

I think I will go and watch this year. Thanks FOF for the advice... I think I will be too stressed as well!!

I think it will be too much for me being my first foal.... I need to get my feet wet with all of this first...

sigh.. :cloud9:
