I'm looking at a beautiful hannoverian gelding this Friday and I've been told by his owner he's allergic to corn :o and will turn into a complete nut if it's fed to him. Do any of you have experience with this and if so, what did you feed??

my friend's horse is allergic to corn and timothy hay, and grass, and the list goes on and on.. but he doesn't get crazy if he is fed these things he just starts losing his hair. They feed him alfalfa cubes soaked in water because he can't have the pelleted grain because it has things he is allergic to and he also can't eat hay. He's a tough horse to feed and keep weight on too. :sigh:

I have a large pony that is allergic to corn. Her reaction is an entire body covered in lovely hives!

Holy Tom do I feel your pain!

We've got one... tested 18 months ago... allergic to corn, oats, flies, molasses, timothy, ragweed, etc. It was SO hard to get weight and muscle on him... his reactions - he'd stop eating and toss his head (discovered 98% of the head tossing was nerves)

Had him retested a few weeks ago ... now allergic to orchard hay too! Vet's suggestion was to take him off all hay and feed him either beet pulp (which he won't touch) or alfalfa cubes.

The feed that's worked well for us is Super Elite 10 by Manna Pro. Looks like chunky dry dog food. It's a fortified feed designed to be easily digested and quickly absorbed. Recommended for horses prone to colic. It can be hard to get, is expensive (nearly $25 a bag), but it contains so many "extras" that I was able to eliminate almost all the supplements (hoof, coat, weight, vitamins)... ended up costing me less per feeding.

While it does contain some corn... it's broken down and processed.

Until the recent elimination of hay...our guy has stayed well muscled, fit, strong hooves and coat is super shiny.

Good Luck!!

I believe all of the Nutrena feeds are corn-free. Check on their website because they might have a complete feed that will work great for you.
