Riding now vs. riding as a kid; do you do the same thing?

As a junior my trainer would put me on all the stoppers to "fix" them. Of the handful of horses there was only 1 we couldn't rehab.

Now 15 years later I wouldn't dream of getting on a stopper!

I also don't smoke in the hayloft, drive the tractor barefoot while mowing the field, ride without a helmet, or experiment with riding backwards. Being a grownup has all these unexpected rewards.

Oh yeah. All that. Age makes you smarter - or its supposed to. <_<

The one thing that slays me every time I see it is people putitng kids on horses with out a helmet (on the kid, not the horse) and people mowing their lawn with kid (or kids) on their laps.

Hello!!

I drove an ambulance for a while and let me tell you - when the kid falls off that mower parts get chopped. Its awful.

But I remember well riding all the machinery as a kid too....

I have NEVER been a trail rider and used to secretly snicker at a group at an old barn that used to really get into it.  I just didn't get riding without a goal.

I have finally realized that the whole goal to being with horses is just to be happy.

*DQ waves at Anyplace*

The whole goal to being with horses IS being happy and having a happy horse too. :)

When I was a kid with a big strided QH mare we did very little showing - horse hated it, and really so did I.

My dream was to ride my horse across the state of MI from one shore to the other. And we did it.

Trail riding is all about fun for you and the horse, not getting lost, the skill of staying on in the wierdest predicaments and having a bold horse under you.

I still do all the things I did as a kid - but not at a canter or trot. I gait now. And the ground is a lot harder these days. I plan to stay in the saddle as much as possible now.

Showing is out - yeee aaawwwwn. I like the all for one and one for all of trail riders.

All for one and one for allllll!

Hahahaha! I love it.

Wavin' right back atcha, girl!

I'd say the biggest difference between now and then is that I now have my own horse.

I grew up in Pony Club and did a little bit of everything - some events they don't even run anymore - but mostly evented. I rode at a very large stable that also held its own shows so did some hunter/combined training at the schooling level as well. Later in my teens I switched to a H/J coach and rode his students' horses. After that barn shut its doors, I moved around a bit, but still rode mostly H/J.

I took a 5 year break. Came back by part-boarding a been-there-done-that hunter for close to a year before finally realizing a lifelong dream and getting my very own! I'm currently showing him hunter, with an eye for the jumper ring, but we'll see...

I evented growing up, and then did IHSA in college and rode at a hunter barn afterward. I recently moved to an eventing barn and couldn't be happier - I think it took trying other things to realize that I really do belong on the Dark Side. :one:

Like others have said, there are major differences between how I used to ride and how I ride now. It's taken awhile to get used to my less-stable, more-chicken self, but I'm working on it!

Doing pretty much the same thing. H/J as a junior, and same today. The only difference being the breaks I have taken over the 17 years between my juniors and today. I galloped racehorses  , ran a large boarding barn :psycho: , instructed :shoot: , managed a private barn :argh: , worked with babies and broke young horses  , and had my own barn  (which I would like again). I am now back riding for myself and enjoy it. The only thing I have found as different is the large amounts of money needed to do it the way I did it as a junior (parents paid for the majority of things-I worked off board cleaning stalls). I also do not bounce like I used to. It hurts to fall off. :(

Mostly doing the exact same thing...with a few new side excursions thrown in now for good measure:

I rode H/Eq as a kid...and had to pay for everything myself...so never had my own horse, just a few kind and generous benefactors with too many horses and not enough time. I can count the number of times I showed as a junior on two hands (9 times) and that was only with the help of my trainer who allowed me to work off my training bills...and even paid for a stall for me once at The Santa Barbara Flower Show. I "worked" that off, too. Bless you, Jill Simpson, for giving a girl with no money the chance to do things she shouldn't have been able to do.

Fast forward to now and I am still riding H/Eq, but with an all around sort of trainer. I've taken the pony out on the XC course (and if he was a different sort would've actually jumped stuff instead of just trying to hang on for dear life while walking around). I'm currently getting the opportunity to ride non-hothouse flower types and will be taking one to a hunter pace in a few weeks. Been XC schooling on a lease horse, took same horse in a parade (quite the crazy experience)...and get to ride on the beach with some regularity. 'Tis all good.

I will say that I've never enjoyed trail riding. NEVER. Even during my 12 year hiatus from riding and people would offer horses for trail riding. I would get bored in about 2 or 3 rides. I LOVE doing circles in the arena. :teehee:

SnackPack, Mr. Fishy says to let you ride Paddy on a trail ride and have someone jump out from behind the bushes and then you wouldn't be bored anymore!

It seems these days trail riding is the only thing I enjoy doing. Don't know why...I find myself in a bit of a slump. Maybe it is because I have no competitions goals for this year while Paddy is sidelined with hoof crack issues. That, and I'm lucky to be in trail riding country with lots of options from being out in the wide open riding with cows, to being in a pine forest with only a single track trail in front of me.

started riding at age 9, was lucky enough to dabble in lots of fun stuff. Did some pony club, showing, hunting, horse trials, dressage, trails, and then got serious on showing and moved to a show barn in my area. Now I am just starting back riding after 17 years and would LOVE to show again (no horse and no funds) but also do love trails, and just playing :)

SnackPak come trail with me - I guarentee you will not be bored.

Relaxed, laughing and riding - but never ever bored. :cheer:

BTW, how good are you at directions???? :teehee:

And think of trail riding as a big 10 mile arena circle. :innocent:

Fishy and DQ...

I don't know if you're going to convince me. It's not that the actual RIDE is boring, because God knows if I thought that I would just have to take Mr. Show Pony out and any thought of boring would go right out the window.

It's that I'm bored. In my head, I know that I can work on all the same stuff as I do in the arena...but what ends up happening is a meander here and there, to and fro. I want structure, I want a plan, I want corners to help me with a shoulder in! I get all La-di-da on the trail and then get bored. For me, trail riding = not in competitive mode...and I'm always in competitive mode...preparing for something be it next week, next month or next year (yes...year....one of the days I will make it to the winter CA GM clinics!). :cheer:

It is entirely possible that I am too focused on goals/competition. :P
