What would you think about a sale horse that was USEF suspended? The seller didn't tell me this. I happened to google and discover it after I saw the horse's ad. I called USEF and the suspension is from 1999 for bouncing a check at 1 horse show. What gives?! Who would DO that?! And not just pay the check after discovering it bounced? Seller manager to get 6-7 of her horses suspended at that same show. And yet she hasn't done anything about them since 1999. Anyway, according to USEF either the owner can clear the problem or, if I buy the horse, I can petition to have the suspension lifted as the new owner. What do you think, would this turn you off entirely? Who DOES stuff like that??!! BTW- Horse has continued to show USEF shows, I guess someone isn't checking the suspended list very closely?! |

Well, about 90% of the very, very long suspension list "did that", so bounced checks that aren't corrected are obviously pretty common. ALL of an owner's horses are usually suspended when the person is suspended, so it doesn't have anything to do with the horse itself. I don't really think it's that big a deal, as long as you forward your paperwork to the USEF they should clear it up quickly once you have purchased the horse. |

Okay that makes me feel better. The USEF person I spoke to said there was a "chance" I could get this cleared up as a new buyer, but she didn't sound 100% certain. I just wonder, if the horse is for sale, why no one else has brought this to the owner's attention?! And why the owner didn't just clear up the problem. And how the owner continued to show the horse without anyone at those shows catching the suspensions?! I am probably prematurely worried. I called 2x on this horse, and in my experience only about 10% of sellers bother to call me back. So I probably won't ever hear from the seller anyway. Thanks Chanda. |

I guess it would depend what the process is with USEF for getting the horse un-suspended. If it's as simple as sending in the sales bill or something easy then it wouldn't bother me. If it's going to cost me $$$ & take awhile & involve a hearing where the horse could possibly be denied, then I would pass. |

If you're worried about the process, then you could always make it a stipulation of the sale that the horse gets unsuspended before the purchase, thereby letting it be their problem. I don't think that's unreasonable on your part. I really don't think it would involve anything other than paperwork, but I have never personally dealt with the issue, so Giddy-up is right, you should make sure of the process. The person you spoke to at the USEF was probably unclear about the process because I imagine most people just say screw it and re-register the horse under a different name. For the record, I'm not recommending that, but I expect it's the common approach. |

I bought a pony who was suspended because it belonged to a barn owner whose whole barn was suspended for something to do with not having a current membership but signing a form stating she did (by "accident" who knows). Anyway, I was annoyed that she hadn't mentioned this before I drove 4 hours to see the pony. But...the process of getting the pony transfered to me was not difficult and the "suspension" did not carry over. Call the main USEF number and ask to speak with someone in the registration dept....they will explain the process. its not that hard actually, which surprised me. i assumed that part of the "penalty" for being suspended was that you couldn't sell your horse (or at least it couldn't be sold and showed). |

I wouldn't be concerned about the horse, but I'd be concerned about doing business with the seller. |

The poor horses through no fault of their own get suspended along with the owners. The owners can't show their horses until the suspension is over whether it's corrected by sending a non bouncing check to whomever or just wait for the time to be up. They can and do sell their horses while under suspension - it is, however, a smidge more difficult for some to do because many horse deals are made at shows. Maybe not so much anymore with the internet. |

Well, it's been one week since I initially called, I've left 2-3 messages on all 3 listed numbers, and no callback. So I guess it doesn't matter if this horse is suspended because evidently the seller can't be bothered to actually sell it. And it's a pro with 6 horses for sale listed on 3 different websites. Guess the listings were just for sh*ts and giggles. |
