So Reese developed a lump on his right fore, just at the top of his fetlock, as soon as I moved him to his "Winter Barn" in October. No lameness, no heat, not squishy. I had the vet out, and we agreed he probably just knocked himself in turnout, and he gave me some Surpass to put on it. He said it would take "a while" to come down. :shoot: Fine.

Fast forward to February, and I am thinking that I need to have it looked at again, as nothing has changed, and I don't want my horse to have a lump on his leg forever. I figured I'd wait until he went back to the Trainer's barn, where he is booted up for turnout, and generally babied a lot more.

Well, last week the lump decided to triple in size :jaw: and I had the vet out immediately to check it out. He flexed COMPLETELY 100% sound on it, and X-rays showed nothing; vet said he'd come back later in the week to ultrasound, as he didn't have the right machine with him that day. He came back Friday, and I couldn't be there. Ultrasound showed a piece of WOOD stuck in his leg :sigh: which needs to be removed under General Anesthesia! He has to go to the clinic Easter Sunday, stay overnight, surgery Monday, stay overnight, then home Tuesday. :o

I am glad it's going to be taken care of, but Tom in Heaven, surgery!?! Urgh! :pissed:

And I know how the little Pisser did it, too. His right front is his pawing leg! Poor Pumpkin...

Well, DANG! Sorry about that.

The **good** news, I suppose, is that it is something easy and fixable. But, sheesh. Who wants to deal with surgery??

Good luck!

Poor Reese :cloud9: Hope the surgery and recovery go well.

I'm surprised he wasn't sore on it. I would definitely limp if I had a chunk of wood stuck in my leg!

Thanks for the well wishes guys! I am delighted that it's fixable, and doubly so that he's completely sound and whatever is in there has not compromised the joint in any way. Leave it to Reese to do the least amount of damage and still require the most expensive fix! :psycho: I am amazed that he's had the thing in there for 6 months, and has never taken a lame step on it...

My coworker heard me grousing about having to take him to the clinic for surgery, and she was all, "Oh No! My gosh, what's wrong with your baby!?!" I had to tell her he has a sliver... :duh:  :teehee:

Jingling for you and Reese, Ride'em. Isn't that bizarre? Can you imagine having a chunk of wood in your leg and not being sore?

I hope his surgery goes well and his recovery is quick.

Are you going to start calling him 'Woody'? :teehee:

:luck: Good Luck with the surgery! At least it's something that is fixable. He must be a tough boy to be sound with a chunk of wood in his leg! My drama queen of a horse wouldn't have been able to stand up!

Well, we dropped him off yesterday afternoon, and he settled in quickly and easily. My vet was there to meet us, and showed me the ultrasound - whatever is in there is tiny, like the size of 2 grains of rice, but the scar tissue around it is substantial. It's close enough to the joint capsule that the doctor might have to leave some of the scar tissue in there, but I assured him that I'll take soundness over beauty any day. So ReeseBeast is probably being anesthetized as I type, and I will expect a phone call around noon to let me know how he's doing.

And as for the new Piedmont clinic, all I can say is WOW! It's fantastic; absolutely a gorgeous facility! :woot:

Just talked to my vet - Reese is out of surgery, up and back in his stall. The surgery went really well, and he didn't have to be casted. :cheer:

There was a perfectly round capsule of tissue that popped right out, apparently, and when my vet opened it up he found puss and...nothing. He said that the shadow on the ultrasound could have been gas from the bacteria or the irritant could have been as small as a grain of sand, but he went through it thoroughly and didn't find anything tangible. Weird. He left a little scar tissue in there, because he went down as far as the joint capsule and could go no further (as predicted) but there's not much there and he said it will just keep getting better.

So it was an abcess of unknown origin, and the surgery was definitely the right move, as it had encapsulated itself, and wasn't trying to come out anytime soon. He'll go home tomorrow, spend two weeks in his stall with a fairly tight bandage on that leg, and then after the stitches come out we'll start back on turnout slowly from there, and then on to some light riding in 3 weeks, give or take.

Thanks for all the jingles and support, they definitely helped my state of mind!
