I am positively anal about my tack or so I thought. It is kept clean and conditioned and some of it is more than ten years old. Yesterday was I was riding my TB mare and we had a disagreement about something and as I took a hold of the right rein to turn her head around, the rein snapped ( it was most definitely an oh sh*t! moment) I grabbed the rein on the left to get her turned around and under control but the balance change was just too much and I ended up hitting the dirt. I was lucky that the big cow didn't fall on me. Bruised ribs, bruised hip and SI, compressed shoulder and road rash on my arm...it's going to be awhile before I get to ride again and it seems that after 50 I don't bounce as well. I know that I would have been ok if that stupid rein hadn't broken....and they were my favorite Old Cavalry 1/2" laced reins

I have lots of old equipment and I will double check it after your experience. Hope you are feeling better soon! We will be jingling for you! I hate to fall off and do all I can to stay in that saddle. A broken rein is not part of my plan!

I forgot to buckle my rein properly after cleaning once, and it came apart too while we were cantering. total surprise! but my horse was being sweet and stopped pretty easy- he was as shocked as me. its the only time I saw trainer laugh. road rash sounds no fun! |

Hope you are doing ok now, that must have been an awful fright Something similar happened to my daughter a few years ago but luckily it ended ok. She was riding around on a lazy wb one lovely day and I was sitting ringside with the barn manager chatting. I noticed she had a strange look on her face and something didn't seem right and mentioned it to the BM. She cantered across the diagonal, did a nice lead change sat up taller and down to trot and walk and stopped in the middle laughing like crazy. Then she showed us the reins in both hands - neither one fastened to the bit any more With all the changing of bits in the barn someone had not quite got the hooks in to the end of the reins I guess. Luckily for us it ended well but it was an interesting ride for her . And she checks these things a tad more carefully now a days!!

I've been off work all week. I had to walk two days with a cane and have been sleeping sitting up in bed. I went in and was xrayed today and there are no breaks So most of the damage is soft tissue damage. I keep looking at that rein and just shaking my head because I know that I would have never fallen off if it hadn't broke. This is the first time in over 40 years of riding hundreds of horses that I have ever had a rein break. There is more to this story unrelated to the rein break but it is just too frustrating to tell right now |

WOW!!!!! Glad you are for the most part okay!! I had a bit break on me once (An Imus bit - design flaw ) and bless my mare's heart she just stopped dead in the middle of the stream we were crossing and would not move.I got my boots wet, but considering what could have happened.... My tack is mostly in the 30 yr old range - time to make checks again. Thanks for a timely reminder!!
