Friday afternoon I got a call about a horse for my DH. Seems he was not working out for the gal that bought him and would we like to take a look at him? (We had scheduled to see this horse, then he sold before we could see him in person.) Saturday I loaded up my horse and we met "Gunner" - a 6 yr old TWH gelding. Bay, bad hair cut, shod in cleats and heels (we are looking at TWHs btw!!), and shod very upright. I do not like the shoe job. Big fella(owner sez 16 hh but I guess him at 15 2, we tack up and head out. No white anywhere, nice plain fella. Skinney. Where is this fellas groceries?? And it appears he has the wear makings from one of those Wonder anti-crib collars. He's a big baby on the ground, perfect gentleman - in fact he opens his mouth and grabs for the bit - almost bridles himself. (10 pnts) Mr DQ likes this about him, I can see. GREAT confidince builder for a newbie.Current owner swings up and i can see he's smooth and an easy ride. (+5 pnts) We head out - his buddy is screaming in the barn but Gunner pays no mind - infact, he's even ignoring the mare next to him, and listening only to Mr DQ. (+ 3 pnts) Down the road we go: Traffic is a non issue to this horse. (+2 pnts) Mr DQ asks him to go in front of Grace - he does as asked (+ 2 pnts) We hit the trails and ask for a running walk. Gunner gets it smooth with a kiss-kiss noise (MR DQ SMILES!!! + 10 bonus pnts) + 2 pnts We ride side by side - both horses smooth to each rider. A MATCH IN GAITS (+ 10 pnts) - this btw is HUGE if you are not a gaited horse rider. It is hard to get matching gait speeds AND for both riders to be comfy at the same time. Very. Hard. We rein in afew times - me first, then he first, then he askes Gunner to go on as we halt, then we ask Gunner to halt as we go on. Passes all tests with flying colors. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 pnts I turn Grace for 'home' while hubby keeps Gunner going out. He does so without a fuss. + 10 pnts. We ride for 2.5 hours. Gunner is not in Grace's shape but he goes gamely along. Our destination: A river. Gunner heads right in - no worries (except for DQ who does not want Mr DQ to go swimming). MR DQ SMILES AGAIN. (+ 10 bonus pnts) + 2 pnts However, Gunner trips 2x on the way back to the barn. - 20 pnts!!! Hmmmm - I think part of it is his shoe-job. He sports 2 large cuts on the back of his feets where he has over reached and caught himself (we saw these before we test rode him, and while they did not get re-cut while we tested him, those cuts are bad bad bad). And his right hind is not quite - something. I can't put my finger on it.And he pees funny. Streaches almost to the ground and if he'd let it hang it would touch the ground...and spurts and squirts (sorry, trying to keep it PG) and its very uhhh, caustic to anything it hits. (Blush - sorry) So we have the farrier and vet out to see him and make an estimation - is the urinary thing a thing or a thing, and can his high heels go away (I gotta show you pics of how this horse is shod! YIKES!!!!) And if those 2 say he's a keeper - he will be. So, send vibes or jingles or whatever that this will be the 'one'. Mr DQ is bonding with him - he has become Gunner food dude and has spent Saturday evening and all Sunday fussing over him. We have him 'home' but seperated. I'm rather excited - can you tell??? |

Wow, he sounds really great, and sounds like he also needs YOU! Could he just have tripped because he's not in the condition your Grace was, but was trying to keep up? (Having images of myself back when I used to run....trying to keep up with this guy at work and struggling. Pretty sure I did a lot of tripping!) That + the shoe job might be the only issue? And my farrier, while reshaping of my TB who's feet were neglected for some time by the prior owner, assured me that any horse's feet can be changed - it's just whether the owner has the patience to wait for it to happen. Of course some horses have better feet than others, but his point was that if you're patient and have a patient farrier, you can do a lot of good. Curious about the urinary issue. I only have mares so can't really even imagine what you're describing.....does he appear to be in pain when he urinates? Maybe a kidney stone? Not sure what the prognosis/treatment for a stone would be, but I thought they were manageable. I like him. Sounds like the kind of horse my dh would like too -- safe, but with a personality! Can't wait to hear more! |

Yep - we chocked it up to bad shoe job + tired boy. And yes, he does appear to have some pain while trying to go. We plan a umm, errr 'cleaning session' with the vet at part of his pre-purchase. This will be the first gelding I've ever sort of owned too. Will need lots of advice from other gelding owners. I like him too - he's a big teddy bear so far. Dave called after giving him his breakfast (part of the bonding) and said he then followed him all over like a big dog.

Oh, a cleaning session and "shower" just for boys. I LOVE it! There are mostly geldings where I take lessons and I find it so fascinating. I rode one TB that was on trial for a few months and when grooming him he dropped and I was horrified. Called my trainer over and suggested someone needed to ahem....attend to his manly needs. His penis was all flaky and cruddy. Yuck! Apparently the owner was not fond of the job and it got neglected....poor boy! Mares are so much neater....in some ways. My TB is quite fastidious. She does roll in the mud, but her winter blanket had not one speck of manure on it. Some dirt, a little hair, a little dust. Don't know how she does it! |

I thought Shane maybe had a urinary issue a few weeks back. Vet said that is very very very rare. I would guess this horse maybe has a filthy sheath and needs a cleaning really bad? Or maybe he's not comfortable peeing under tack (my horse isn't). As for the feet, I'd say vet him and see what the vet says. I bet it's something that could be worked on with fitness and a different shoe job. So HAPPY that you're close to finding what you need!

I wuz waiting for you to check in vxf - I'm on pins and needles about the tripping thing. If he did not trip I'd say sold. If he'd drop his package I could check for ummm errr, chunks and bad wrappings. Someone said I should see if he smells bad. Ahem. My NOSE is not going near THERE on horse. NOT. GOING. I'm excited and fearful and....... Last Friday there were no prospects either and then *poof* - this fella. |

If he has a big old bean he is going to pee funny. A good cleaning never hurts - have the vet do it. |

I'd guess that the tripping is probably the shoe job, too. None of my horses are really clumsy or anything, but when it's time to be reset and reshod, they stumble around a good bit. I have one lazy gelding who stumbles in the front AND in the back when his feet start getting too long. (There's nothing wrong with him; we've had him checked out.) I wonder if it's harder on gaited horses to gait properly when their feet aren't quite right. I see it happening pretty often. |

Sooooo The farrier was out and re-did him and he's going sooo much better. The vet passed him for our trail adventures, and thus far he has been a gentleman in all respects. Vet returns tonight to do his teeth, clean his sheath, and spring shots. I am very excited that we have him - and very nervous for him to be a GOOD BOY for all things to come. Its so much easier to get a horse for me then for hubby. So much pressure!!! |
