Flex Stirrup spinoff - safety?

DH rides in the knock-off jointed stirrups (with the grey rubber). He loffs them; feels they significantly reduce knee pain. However, he was riding my little horse Friday and got too far ahead on a jump. He landed way high on the neck, which horsie took as a signal to gallop. DH was too far forward to regain his seat, plus was twisting sideways, so went to just jump clear - off the side of the horse. He was wearing tall boots. One foot got caught :o

They went almost halfway around the arena before he was able to bail out. DH had no injuries except a major muscle cramp in the calf of the leg that got stuck, but we're trying to figure out what happened. Did he just get his foot twisted? Or did the rubber sides of the stirrup contribute? Might have been a nasty accident. Is anyone aware of similar problems?

Wholly...cow!!!!!
THIS is why DH isn't allowed to ride...
I'm glad he's "OK".
As far as safety, I've seen just as many (actually, more) of the same type accident with regular edges, although you'd have to believe the rubber is a tiny bit stickier...

No, I can't specifically blame DH - while I am a re-rider and he came to the sport as an adult, he is probably better over fences than I am at this point :argh: ( but not in equitation :nyah: ). His horse is just coming back from a bowed tendon, though, and will not be jumping for several more months. Whereas we were getting mine ready for a little show the next day, so figured having DH ride him in his lesson would just be more prep work for the horse.

Oops.

Horse got over it just fine, and again DH simply got a sore leg out of the deal. And I know that that kind of accident can certainly happen with regular fillis stirrups. It's just that I got to SEE this one happen, and was concerned as to whether there was some safety issue with the jointeds, and if so how to best address it - different footwear? Different stirrup size? Ride with them longer (or shorter) than the regular stirrups?

This past weekend one of our boarders was showing her guy and she came off sideways over his neck. She has those break away stirrups that look like normal irons but the metal side pops away from the top. Well the point/ lock on the stirrup punctured through her boot and would release. So she was hanging there. So much for safety stirrups

You've definitely got less room across in the jointed stirrups -- if he's riding in the "normal" size ones, and has a "normal" size man's foot, it might be a somewhat snug fit - and the rubber is definitely stickier than iron (although I love the feeling that my foot is very stable in mine). I think you can get them bigger, although you'd have to do some research -- probably Beval's or similar could get them for you.

Fortunately I've only falled off twice with the jointed irons, and each time came clear off, no problem with feet getting stuck.
