I will as soon as he looks "presentable." He needs a good bath, his mane pulled, and some cornflakes first.

His barn name is "Rudy," which he came with and which suits him. I will be changing "Park The Bug" posthaste, however! Even my vet, who usually doesn't opine on such things, said, "Yeah, that's pretty bad."

I shall save my naming thread for TOB, but there are three names in the running: Balkai, Saison and Singsong. Balkai is a lake in Russia (and seeing as he's by Gorky Park and his second dam is Water Bug, out of Cascade, by Precipitation, I figure some form of Russian water would be appropriate). Saison is a type of pale Begian Ale that is not only delicious ;) but is chestnut in color. Singsong is a play on my screen name, which was the name of my junior hunter--who was also chestnut with a blaze and a hind sock.

The only problem with Balkai and Saison is the potential for announcer-mangling. <_< They are pronounced, respectively, Ball-KYE (second syllable rhymes with "why") and Say-SAHN (second syllable rhymes with "on").

I know you aren't really asking about names, but I like Saison. Balkai sounds too much like "balky," and you don't want that! He sounds lovely, BTW. Congratulations! Do post some pics as soon as you can. :)

Is Kivach pronounced "k' VASH?" That's pretty cool. Although it does remind me of Vache, which happens to be one of Chanter's many screen names! :teehee:

Saison is also French for season. I don't speak French--anyone know if it is masculine or feminine? Don't want to give him a girly name!

its feminine but it doesn't really matter as long as you don't put the "la" in front
Congrats! Where in MD are you located?

I like Saison, as a beer and as a name! Balkai suits him, though - I like names that refer back to the sire and dam. Congrats!

Sorry, earth science professor chiming in here. The lake in Russia is actually Baikal (pronounced bye-kal), also spelled Baykal, unless there is another lake named Balkai that I don't know about (totally possible). Anyway, I think that it would be a really cool name. I love your reasoning behind the name Saison - I've enjoyed a few Belgian Saisons myself!

Hmmm, my Russian-speaking, Ukranian-born boss gave me that name, but she didn't write it down, so maybe I turned the syllables around in my head. I'll have to double check with her. Baikal is definitely the deepest lake, but maybe there is one named Balkai.

Anyone got any other Russian water names?

Heinie, I'm in Union Bridge--the Carroll County side. I used to be in Upper Montgomery county, until the cost of property, taxes, gas, etc. drove me out!

I ride with Joyce McDonald up in Gettysburg (she used to be over in Elkridge, near Baltimore, but she retired a couple years ago and doesn't do an boarding at all). She has a schooling show series that I did last year, and I've been riding one of her jumpers for her. we were supposed to go to Swan Lake in early March, but then the EHV-1 outbreak came, along with the weather, and we lost a bunch of time (no indoor). Hopefully we'll see you at Culpeper with the jumper this summer? I'm thinking Rudy is going to work on getting groceries and home miles this year. :P

Figured I'd update you all on my travails!

Farrier came last week to pop shoes on new boy and said, "Um, ain't no hoof wall here." So we agreed that I should get some boots and ride him in those at least until his feet grow down, and also use Keratex to toughen up his soles.

Unfortunately, he also managed to find SOMETHING to hook himself on and gave himself a nice laceration behind the pastern. On the fortunate side, it was not through the dermis, and he's used to bandages, so he was a good patient and it's pretty much healed.

Now I will confess to doing something outrageously stoopid. I was standing in the paddock in plain old shoes, chatting with him (and standing directly in front of him) when something spooked him from behind. He jumped right onto my foot, and our knees actually knocked together. :argh: I now have three lovely purple toes, and am sitting at my desk with a pack of frozen peas lashed to my foot. :sigh:

I'm hoping this is not the beginning of a trend. Especially as I bathed and trimmed him (and he stood like a rock for the trimmers) and he looks bootiful. :shoot:
