Is it just me, or is the horse market just awful? I'm having trouble selling anything here, even at very reasonable prices :brickwall:. Is anyone else having this problem, or is it just bad karma for me?

I thought it was going the other way! I'm buying, looking to spend a reasonable amount (not a ton but more than enough to get something) and I have trouble even finding something to go look at. I think it's location, prices are a bit off the charts in my area. If I was still in GA, I would have had something months ago. *sigh*

Well - I just bought a nice filly, and sold 2 mares in the last 1-2 months - one as a broodmare and one as a riding horse.

Just got a call from a client last night who wants a very very fancy palomino TB filly to show on the line first, then breed.

Have several people interested in my Galoubet mare's foal (due May 4th), have the 2007 and 2008 foals out of Puchi Trap sold already, and also have people enquiring on the 2010 foal out of my new filly already so for me it is healthy and consistent and strong right across the board ... :)

The next venture I am going to look into and I have NO idea what the market will be for this, is selling eggs in 2008, from my RFF Pearlescent perlino filly. One WB stallion owner is quite interested in doing so right now and I am tentatively seeing if there is a strong market for them or not. Time will tell I guess ... :)
It will give them the 100% guarantee of a dilute foal by their stallion and the filly DOES have some very nice bloodlines, conformation and movement to back her up so I am :luck: my fingers that I will be able to market her in this way successfully ...

I just sold my 06 colt and had about five people who inquired about him immediately after and were extremely disappointed that he was sold. So I was hoping that meant the market was looking up...

It seems in fall NO ONE buys but in spring everyone is buying, IMO.

Well, I guess I just have VERY bad karma!:angry:<_< I've had virtually no luck selling anyone unless I cut the price so low that I'm just about giving them away :psycho:. What are the best sites for selling?

*sigh*

Looking for a quiet, easygoing, forgiving confidence horse. Doesn't EVER have to jump over 3'0 as that is my lifetime height goal. Would be doing 2'6 for a whole year before moving up. Green is okay but has to have the packer personality and be calm at shows because I have hellacious show nerves.

Breed unimportant, size unimportant (16 or bigger, but I don't love huge and if I look okay on the horse I don't really care what it sticks-- but I am 5'7 with a long torso so I need a long neck to balance me out), gender unimportant, I don't do grays but otherwise color is unimportant.

I want a really good, flat kneed daisy cutter mover. Why? Because I like that AND because I know I'll screw up the o/f classes and I like to know I have SOME shot at a hack ribbon.

Sound. Maintenance okay on an older horse but horse can't have some huge ongoing problem. I also can't have stable vices because I board.

It's not the horse in my Avatar, although he is available also but he cribs and is no daisy cutter :brickwall:

I plan to get the other guy to some CCHSA shows in April

Okay, god forbid I am still looking in April. But that's entirely possible. I'd love to hear about your guy so that I can look out for him if I am still shopping. I *might* have a horse to vet this weekend, depending on how my second trial goes...

Thankfully, I pretty much have the freedom to hold on to a horse until I find the right person. This frusterates buyers because I won't drop them to dirt cheap

Right now, I simply don't have the time to market horses correctly. I do like doing it, but I pretty much don't pursue it strongly right now.

A prospective buyer come out at look at horses in pasture shape because she said she understood that I was busy, etc... wanted to talk me down huge on the prices because I obviously "wanted to get them off the farm".

Oh, if I really want them off them farm... they look pretty stinkin' shiny . :teehee:

Thankfully, with a certain group of clients, I'm getting to the point where the horses sell themselves (like TrueColors). The owner of the jumper The Big Easy basically sold a 3/4 brother (Wind Riddle) to a friend of hers... another friend wanted another 3/4 sibling and they actually called with names from pedigreequery.com asking if I had them. I just had a 3/4 sister shipped in from Kansas to show them... and she looks like her family - thank goodness! This wasn't even a mare we were really motivated to sell.

But yeah, even when I'm rolling with the horse selling it's hard. I had a *nice* gelding. *NICE* gelding. Right off the track I asked $2.5k for him, BNT wanted him, but only with 6 week trial (yeah right!) buyers after that snorted when I wanted $3.5k (I had put some riding time on him), finally, after about 10 minutes with the *perfect* potential people I sold him for more than that and we're all thrilled with the outcome. But yeah, I had the horse on the market for 7 months, most people can't swallow that like we can.

Interesting, the quietest horse I've ever had that I've done the most with hasn't sold after almost a year (thought I've gotten offers... between $2,500-1,500 (I'd have sold him for $4k if someone had offered)). He's back at the track. AWESOME horse with a great mind (but sorry, grey and a good mover but not a 10 mover).

The big wonky guy in my avatar sold quickly, for far less than I wanted, but some maintenance issues come up on the PPE.

Sadly, I think what I've learned is that big and flashy sells much better than plain and sensible (thought those that have bought my plain and sensible have gone to the bank in giggles on resale).

Speaking of shiny. I had a 16.3h 3 year old gelding who was a looker and a half but absolutely nuts (not in a mean way, in a stupid way) I had him on the market for cheap cheap cheap because I wouldn't ride him (he was a bolt and drop shoulder type)... he sold FAST even with the caveats about his temperment. (About a month later I had to go trailer him home for them from a trail ride because he decided that he absolutely wouldn't load into their 2 horse trailer anymore... idiot horse...).

I'm trying to figure out how to communicate with people that my advertised price is as low as I will go. I like the "No Dicker Sticker" policy of the car lot down the road, thus I price the horses for what I want for them. Amazingly, those who I've actually SOLD horses to rarely negociate strongly. Maybe because I've never agreed to sell to those people. LoL. One trainer offered $4,500 for a gelding advertised at $5,000 and a mare advertised at $1,500. Like I would have given them both to him for $5,000 (thus they would have had the client pay for the gelding they wanted and gotten the mare they wanted as a resale for free)... but I couldn't play that game at that level. It makes us both sound crazy.

Random thoughts for today, lol.
