actually, you're likely to lose big time if you are at fault in a car vs bike accident...just like pedestrian accidents

My point about about who would "win" in a car versus cyclist was that it's a whole lot more likely that the cyclist would be killed and the driver wouldn't, and that perhaps cyclists should consider the laws of physics over the rules of the road. :bigwhoop:

However, I agree that it's a few bad apples ruining the bunch. A majority of those seem to be concentrated in the Potomac/Poolesville, MD area. Now that I live up in Carroll County, the cyclists I encounter are much more concientious about getting in single file when there's traffic on the road.

I too am cursed with the spandex meatheads in the road. Like Mistyblue. I was not completely against sharing the road.. but these folks don't share, they take over! With a car I pay my share of taxes to support those roads.. as a bicycler they do nothing but put me and everyone around them in danger. I am passionate about my feelings for these people and yes I do scream at them. I never have kids with this attitude. The packs make me nuts.. and there are pods in the packs so if you get around this group of 20 there are 3 in a cluster, then another 10, then 1 and so on and so on.

Took a spin through Amish country and was passing buggies on tiny, windy, uphill single lane roads. I'll take bikers ANY day! :) No road apples to complicate things. :):)

No, I know what you mean. I am always surprised that so many roadies don't really seem to care about WHAT they are on the road with. I actually don't love riding on the road, and do most of my road bike riding on the W& OD or with a few very good road riders that I feel safe with.

And I lived in Poolesville for several years. While I know the hills through that area are GREAT for conditioning (which is why there are SO many of them...actually, that whole route is in lots of cycling guides and magazines), they are so full of speeding yahoos in either rusted out pick ups are giant SUV imports that I've never understood why anyone would want to ride out their. I do have a friend that is an Ironman triathlete who lives in Bethesda and LOVES riding out to Poolesville and down 28. SCARY! :jaw:

In Southampton we have the skaters to deal with too....Nothing like trying to drive the 4-horse (thank god not w/a dually) past: 1) the entire membership of the urban cycling club out for a weekend ride in the country, 2) the joggers (indiscriminately jogging toward you or away from you on both sides of the road), 3) citiot parents strollering their youngest while not paying ANY attention to their other children (wee're in the countrrrrreeeeeee, Char-r-r-r-r-r-les) who are circling to and fro on bikes with training wheels most of which have tall flags attached to them, and best of all 4) dozens of motorcycle gangsta wannabees revvvvv----vvvvv----vvvvving down the road under the speed limit as they wind their way around the human and animal obstacles in their path 5) because let's not forget the citiot dog lovers enjoying the country with their pooches--all on extension leashes that make our longe lines look short and, last but not least 6) the inline skaters of varying skill levels zigggggggginnngggggg and zzzzzaaaaagggggginggggg back and forth from both directions, side by side!

It's a wonder I stayed out of jail long enough to move to VA!!!

How exactly does a cyclist put YOU in danger? If you get your knickers in a twist and come flying around a paceline, YOU have put yourself in danger. ChilltheFUCKout and slow down! And yelling at cyclists? Please. Are your kids watching this charming behavior? Nice example, asshat.

Let's turn it around for a minute. Somewhere in Internet land there is probably a mountain bike forum bashing those rude equestrians. If you were to read that, you all would be completely batshitcrazy going on and on about your "rights".

Get off your high horse and get real. Actually, get your ass on a bike. It might do you some good. :soapbox:

Besides, in a collision between the cyclist and the car, who do you really think is going to win? Hint: it's the sheet metal, stupid.

But sadly, even if the car "wins" in the collision game, who wants to deal with the guilt of maiming or killing someone? Yes, cyclists should be aware that they are up against a ton of metal that could kill them in an instant, but drivers should be aware that if they seriously injure a cyclist...they are going to have some lasting psychological ramifications as well.

Cyclists really do need to follow the rules as well...if cars are behind you, get in single file, and don't ride like an idiot.

Maybe drivers should think of cyclists as riders out enjoying an afternoon on their horse. Would you speed pass them or even yell at them for taking up the road? Probably not...you'd slow down, gingerly pass so as not to spook the ponies and then be on your merry way.

We've got the same problem here in Phoenix. Not that it's as scenic as NoVa, but the roads tend to be straight, but some hills and so lots of bikers out training...especially on the exact roads I need to take to get to hunt meets. Oh, and dipshit motorcyclists and pickemup truck drivers, too. Don't get me wrong. All sorts of idiots going too fast or too slow on the roads.

My "favorite" near miss was the jackass cyclist who wandered into my lane from the wide shoulder in front of my effin' horse van. Which, as many of you know, doing the posted limit of 55 cannot stop on a dime and takes up the near width of a lane. As I was in the right lane, hemmed in by the faster traffic to the left, all I could do was stand on the brakes and horn, cursing loudly and hoping my horse didn't come thru the cab. While I prayed this fool didn't smear himself on my bumper. :argh: :censored: :pissed: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

So many inattentive jerks, with what seems like that great sense of American entitlement. "Hey, I'm exempt!" :psycho:

While hunting, or trail riding, I try to wave at any car that goes by and especially if they slow down or stop for us. Good manners, that's all.
