O.K. this is driving my crazy and I'm sure it does for others too. Why the hell can't people ride their bikes or jog use the FFFiing side walk??? Why must they use the road when there is a perfectly good sidewalk or bike path right next to the road?
Oh this just drives me The other thing is its not like they are close to the shoulder of the road they're in the middle of the god damn street. People roads are for vehicals not for joggers or bicylces...

Those are the people that give bikers a bad name.
My dad was a competitive mountain biker and it was pretty common to see him out on the roads near our house; often he would take me with him on shorter rides. He told me that if I dared bike in the middle of the road and not on the shoulder (no sidewalks near us) he would skin me alive and take my bike. I'm pretty sure he didn't say that because he wanted my bike.

For what it's worth, many runners use the street because concrete is harder than asphalt, so if you do a lot of running you can do more damage to your feet/knees on the sidewalk because of the hardness of the surface. That said, when I did a lot of running (back in my glory days... <_< ) I found it much more relaxing to use the sidewalk anyway. Otherwise you had to be really alert for cars and that ruined it for me. My biggest pet peeve is runners or bikers using the road but going the wrong way. Runner toward traffic, you idiots! Bike with traffic, or get off the road! |

FWIW...Depending on state law, cyclists have a right (and may be required) to ride the road and must follow traffic laws and laws specific to cyclists. Cyclists in my state may travel two abreast and must move to the right and single file for faster traffic to pass when it is safe to do so. (so on a blind curve they do not have to yield the lane so a car can go around them and cause an unsafe situation) My husband is a competative road cyclist and rides the roads all the time. He obeys the law. I only hope drivers share the road safely with bicycles, the way they need to with horses at crossings and trails that are adjacent to the road. Cyclists who don't follow the law, just like motor vehicle drivers who don't follow the law, make the road unsafe. |

We live on a country road between Baltimore and Washington that are on the map of triathletes training information, and the site of several triathlons. Bicyclists come from miles around to use these roads. Sometimes I have to wait for them just to turn out of our driveway. My beef? They ride in packs. Long, two and three wide packs, and, unless you catch them going up hill, they go pretty fast, so passing takes a few seconds. So it's really dicey getting by, and they don't seem to bother to stick to the side of the road. Can get a little scary actually. |

In most places cyclists aren't ALLOWED on the sidewalks. They endanger pedestrians. In the same way that we expect people to respect us on our horses taking up space on the roads, alas, we should show some respect to the bikers. They are allowed, they follow the laws, and in the grand scheme of things, a few minutes out of our lives here and there to make sure they are safe is good for the Karma Ka-ching-er.

I had a friend who used to say that he thought bicyclists believed they were protected by "an invisible shield of righteousness." Sometimes they certainly act that way. Bicycles on sidewalk? Nooooooooooooo. Bicycles or horses three abreast in the middle of the road? Noooooooooo. Just the tiniest smidgen of common sense comes in so handy. |

Smiles, I am so there with you!!!! This is a common phenomenon in my town and it drives me crazy!!!!! My fiance runs every day and has to listen to my rants about people running in street. He explained that it's really hard to run on the sidewalk right after it snows, because the sidewalks are still snowy. But what on earth is the reason in the summer?????? The other day, there was a woman running down the street WITH A BABY JOGGER!!!!! Yes, I get that it's probably a pain in the neck to get the baby jogger over the curbs. But what's more important? A little inconvenience in your running or keeping your baby safe? I have been so tempted to pull up next to one of these folks and politely ask why they're not using the sidewalk. But I'm confrontation-phobic, so I just stew in the car. |

I find that so irritating, too. What really annoys me is when I'm driving, there are a bunch of bikers on the road, and then there's an actual bike path right there that they can use. I wouldn't mind so much if they at least when single file and close to the shoulder, but I always come across people biking three or four abreast spread all across the road. |

I *hate* bicyclists sicne moving to my current location. We have tons and gobs and herds of weekend warrior moron bikers who ride in giant groups up and down our scenic roads. And yes, our roads are very cenic...it's a gorgeous ride I'm sure. However, our lovely scenic roads are narrow as hell and windy as hell and barely fit two cars passing each other in opposite directions. Since we're heavily wooded everywhere, it's impossible to see very far ahead on any road due to trees, sharp turns and curves and hills everywhere. We also have tons of large trucls due to tons of horse farms...on any given day I pass as many duallies as I do sedans on the road. Add in the stupida frikking bikers...who are completely decked out in neon colored body tights as if they're all Lance Armstrong...and they're all riding in groups of 4 to 10 side by freaking side! At a top speed of maybe 15-20 mph so they can chat to each other or yak on their cell phones. And if youo come up behind them and get stuck back there, the most they'll do is glance over their shoulders and glare at you for interrupting the conversation. So you continue to creep along behind them until you get so fed up you either lay on the horn or hang out your window and scream, "MOVE before I run your yuppy asses over!" You can't pass them because it's not safe on these roads. I'm always tempted if I'm in the passenger seat to lean out my window and start shoving shoulders to knock the stupid morons over. |

Well - I hope these people dont live in Winnipeg, Manitoba where the latest "Sport" among teens is stealing a car and then intentionally looking for and running down walkers, joggers and cyclists on the side of the road and then driving off leaving them dead or injured in the ditch. And then because of our wonderful "Young Offender's Act", if they are under 18 (which the majority are) they get released to their parents who are mostly drug addicts and alcoholics, are told to not do it again and within the week they are arrested once again for the same thing ... I think its cured most or all of people in Winnipeg from doing ANYTHING on the roads ... |

Misty Blue, I'm going to have to assume you're a neighbor -- this describes my neighborhood perfectly. And it's Yuppie Biker Heaven -- all those pharmaceutical managers have got to get out of the hideous McMansions and riiiiiiiiiiiiide. With fifteen other Spandex Boyz & Girlz. With kids it's often effective to stop them and ask if they understand how horrible it would be for YOU, if you had to go tell their mother that you'd run over them ... But then, most of the world views foxhunters with the same admiration we give to bikers. So it depends on which weird sport you're into, I guess. |

Bikers are not allowed on sidewalks here but on many roads there are bike lanes. Last week we had a huuuuge blizzard and I was on my way to work. I was driving very slowly as the roads were complete crap (30 km/hr instead of 50km/hr) and what do I see coming towards me? A large herd of runners!!.... there must thave been about 40 of them coming towards me on my side of the road- as I said before the roads were crap and I had to move on to the median (not plowed - about 6 inches of snow - I have no snow tires) to get out of the way because they certainly weren't getting out of the way! Instead I got several dirty looks?!! Apparently this group of runners is from the Running Room in the area and they are known for taking over the road

OMG! I hate it when people bike in the road too! I have seen 2 bicyclists get hit by cars b/c they decided to bike on the road in rush hour traffic in No. VA!!!! They were on a main road too! What were they thinking? It also makes me super mad when these people decide to ride their bikes on windy, little roads with a lot of blind turns and hills - it's soooo dangerous for them and hello even if they don't care if they get hit by a car, I don't want to hit them and then be sued!

Now wait a minute. Can't we all agree to share? I see bikers as saving fuel and doing good for our environment. And they are burning calories I wish I was. Why are we all so convinced the road is OURS - so that we don't share with the bikers?? When I was a kid people would smile at me on my horse and show down and wave - now they zoom past - in a hurry, on thier cell tell or clicking thier PDA. Come on now - lets all take a deep breath, relax, SMILE at each other and share. That biker is someones wife, husband, father, child, cousin.....they may be working out the cure to your cancer as they pedal along. Smile. Share the road. Please!!!! |
