The 3/3 issue of The Blood-Horse contains a 6-page article by Barbara Livingston, titled "Running Colors" I think she provides some really interesting background on the white and dilute TBs.

We were really excited that out of all the photos Barbara submitted, the editor chose to run a photo of our stallion GPs Krugerrand.

They also included a STUNNING photo of an oddly marked black&white filly named "Painting Shadows" (from Painted Desert Farm), as well as variety of photos of horses registered as white.

Anyone interested in Barbara Livingston photos, or "pretty" colors in TBs should try to get their hands on this issue before it's off the newstands.

Congratulations on being included in that article! How terrific! And its nice that the coloured TB's are getting more and more press as well in well respected publications like The Blood Horse

I'll have to see if I can get a copy of one sent to me ...

Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks!! Barbara took so many beautiful photos of palominos that it was hard to believe our boy would be selected for the article.

I think they really liked his "spots" He has a lot of Bend Or markings, which contrast nicely on his gold coat.

I also thought we were getting a photo of our filly in COTH, but I haven't seen it yet. Has anyone seen the issue yet with the photos of the hunter breeding zone champions? I seem to get my COTH at random intervals, and sometimes not at all.....

(does not getting your magazine count as a subset of being shunned??) :P

This is the second time I have seen the term "bend or spot" used. Could someone explain this to me? What is it and how did it get its name? Thanks!

BTW, congratulations!!! I know you must be so proud!

"Bend Or spots" are also called "oil spots" or "grease spots" They are black spots that appear on horses' coats. Generally those horses are chestnuts, and appear even more obvious on light chestnuts and palominos.

In thoroughbreds, there was a successful stallion named "Bend Or" who had many of these spots, and they appear frequently in his descendents.

You can see photos of Bend Or and read more about it at:
http://www.tbheritage.com/Portraits/BendOr.html

GPs Krugerrand is a "poster child" for these spots:

I don't think anyone really knows the exact genetics of it, but it certainly has a genetic link. Almost all of Krugerrand's foals have some degree of spotting.

Congratulations!!! :cheer:
Can someone scan the article for those of us not fortunate enough to live in the US?!?

My mare is covered in Bend Or spots and has passed them on to all of her foals, one of them, who is now two, has a perfect rectangle of black on one side of his face. One day one of the barn know- it- alls asked what it was called and my boyfirend quickly replied "it's a Bend Or rectangle" her answer was " Oh I've heard of them, all Arabs get them when they get old dont they?" :mallet:  My mare is a full TB and her colt is by a Hannoverian. :brickwall: some people!

The Blood-Horse article won't be posted on their website, and scanning it would be a little problematic as it's copyrighted material.

If you'd like to see some photos, Barbara has posted some of our palominos at:

Our new stallion was in that article as well pictured as a yearling. All Glory to God will be four in June and looks really different from his yearling picture!!
