The saddle is much nicer than anything I could ever afford new, I'm so glad I found it and it fits the beast and myself pretty well, and is wool flocked to boot. I don't know what I did to make the saddle fairy think I was deserving of something so nice for such a price, but whatever it is, I'm glad I did it. The only thing that's realy wrong with the saddle are the panels. The leather is cracked, no tears, but it's still there. How best to prevent the cracks from getting worse? The saddle is dry as it is, but I don't know what my best bet is with something that has all of this cracking... I'm so excited though. Really. I still have to call the guy and tell him to charge my card, but after much deliberation over the panels, I've decided it's worth it and to keep it.

For deep conditioning, I use Hooper's Saddle Food (or Leather Food -- I can't remember the name exactly). I also use the Belvoir spray conditioner. Both are very good. And congratulations on the new saddle! What kind is it?

Thanks...I have some of the Leather CPR I was thinking about trying (thanks to a gift certificate to the local tack shop) I stopped by and they didn't have anything else but fiebings, lexol, and neatsfoot oil, and horsemans one step (which I don't really like) I haven't seen the Belvoir or Hoopers stuff...where do you buy it? The saddle is a Delgrange/PJ Original. It was really cheap (like, just shy of $500). I kept looking for something that could possibly be wrong with it, but could only conclude that the plain flap and cracked leather on the panels must have been the contributing factor to its cheapness. Other than that it's in really great shape. lol A friend of mine bought a stubben, and used the hammanol but she said it stunk!!! I might try some of that saddle/leather food. I really hope to make the saddle last as long as possible, as it will likely be a long while before I can get another. Thanks for the suggestions.

I got the Hooper's at Rick's Heritage Saddlery. Most of their stuff is not listed on their website. Just call them and tell them what you're looking for. It wouldn't surprise me if they have the Belvoir also. You can get Belvoir from Dover or any number of online places. Rick's Not to burst your bubble, but I have tried the Leather CPR. At first I loved it -- it does a great job cleaning. But after a while I noticed that my leather was drying out. So, now I'm stuck with a big bottle I'll probably never use. Oh well.

I am a fan of the Effax Lederbalsam. It comes in a brown tub and smells very nice. It has beeswax and avocado oil in it, among other things. It starts out as a paste but if you use your fingers to apply it, it will warm with your body temp and turn more into a liquid. I work a thin layer in with my fingers, repeating on really dry spots. It works nicely both on stiff new tack and stiff old tack.
