We have a boarder mare who is going to be starting on cimetidine in a few days. She's a cribber and dribbles most of her feed around the stall, so we're concerned she won't actually eat the pills. As for dosing, she HATES it. Doesn't matter what you put in to mix it with, she hates the syringe going in her mouth. So, we were thinking of finding a way to make a treat that can be fed to her 2x a day (by BO only) that contains her meds. Any ideas? My only concern is somehow diminishing the effect of the meds by cooking them. What do you think?

I have no experience with making horse treats, and may well be talking through a hole in my head.
The thought is kind of interesting though. Have you considered making them with gelatine, to make a jelly (mix in whatever mare likes, apple sauce, oats, etc), or pectin to make a freezer style jam type mix. I think the packets will give you the ratio of water for the consistency required, so you would just need to add stuff you think might appeal to the mare, and the drugs. If this didn't work you could make a kind of oat (or any other grain) cookie, with added molasses, and some ground grain to absorb the moisture in the molasses, and cool in the fridge. Good luck |

Don't cook the medication, you could end up with some nasty reactions, and also render the medication useless. |

HoofPrince has a good idea about mixing the medicine with molasses, oats, chopped carrots etc. then putting it in the fridge. Sort of like a no bake cookie. |

What about just cutting an apple in half and poke the pills into the open side of the half. We have dug little holes and put bute in and my picky boy just snarfed it down.

The no-cook cookie option may work. She doesn't like apples, just carrots. |
