What the heck does "deep hocked" mean? I see it a lot in ads for QHs and Appendix QHs that do AQHA HUS. Is this an aspect of conformation or movement/action?

Good question. I bet you are right. I bet it means those QHs that move in a way that I call 'squatty'. Where they tuck their pelvis under themselves and look like they are sitting behind when they move.

Harrumph - if it describes current QH movement it must be a BAD word. :pissed: Who's idea is it that these short strided crablike motions are at all horse like?

Another one I see in stallion ads, especially Western-y stallion ads - what is "brio"? What does it mean when a horse has brio??

You also see this term a lot in the Paso Fino world. In selecting for temperament, Peruvian Paso breeders are searching for brio. Brio is often translated as "spirit," but this does not capture the complexity of the term. Brio is a somewhat contradictory temperament, which combines arrogance, spirit, and the sense of always being on parade, with a willingness to please the rider. If a horse has a bad temperament, it will not be bred, lest that trait be passed to further generations.

Con Brio in Spanish means "with vigor."

Brio I can define: spirit.
Deep Hocked seems to mean something different to everybody with no real definition. I guess to me (NOT a QH person) it would mean the hocks are well set under the body, with a deep bend or angle behind, with a sloping rear leg conformation- not what we want in hunters.
It makes the horse looked camped under behind.

A "Deep hocked" hrose in the QH world means a horse that steps UNDERNEATH himself well when moving, and doesn't "trail" the hocks behind him, it has nothing to do with conformation

You're in a fortuante area, not to have experienced 'deep hocked' as it means here (sadly).

Deep hock (roached and tucked)
Packed tail (injected)
Natural low head carriage (rigged to death..tied to the side and up ALL day and/or night)
Flat kneed (well flat kneed...tight shoulder ..suspect jump)
There are a multitude more of these that got me sssssshhuuuuuuuunnned on the "pleasure horse" (oxymoron...hahahahaha) site. They look like end of the trail sculpture by Remmington.
OK SO what the heck does "own son of...." mean????

Own son means son. Gotta throw in that fancy extray word to make it sound better
Like we call stock trailers with a divider (iow .. pretty much every one made)stock/combo trailers. Like it's a combo because you can also use it for horses.. :psycho:

It's a perception some people have, like "good feet"= size 00 on a 1400# QH.
Not picking on QH, but there's a lot of 'different' sort of terms out there.

Staying with the "let's pick on the QH circuit" theme the one I thought was pretty stupid was "the pen was really deep" I thought 'footing'?? NO...it means there are a lot of horses in the class!! They have many QHisms that are a bit amusing and affected....
slow legged...(???) anyone????
and that thing about not being able to pass any horse "in the pen"...just ride them into the wall! All the QH retreds I have had ALL ride into the wall!
OH!! and how about the backing up??? :argh: I have had them make a mistake and then BLOW backwards a hundred miles an hour!! :o (QHs have good guilty consciences) Backing up as a punishment reinforces the ride to the wall and above all do NOT go forward!! (I am amazed anyone jumps some of those horses...scarey!)
OK Rant over :soapbox:
